Danny Murphy

Tottenham have beaten the transfer window deadline to capture midfielder Danny Murphy from Charlton in a deal which could be worth up to £2m.

Spurs have succeeded in capturing the 29-year-old at the second attempt after he chose Charlton ahead of them when he left Liverpool in August 2004.

 

But Murphy, who scored 10 goals in 64 appearances for the Addicks, became unsettled at the club.

 

He completed his move just half an hour before the transfer window shut.

 

Murphy told the Spurs website: "Spurs has always been a club that has attracted me, but whereas previously things didn't work out, this time they have and I am absolutely delighted.

 

"I am looking forward to playing my part in the team Martin Jol is building."

 

Spurs sporting director Damien Comolli added: "Danny is an experienced player who is used to playing at the highest level.

 

"He has a fantastic ability to create chances and we are delighted that we have been able to bring him to the club."

Er I think he meant that he nearly joined Spurs when he left us but that the transfer "didn't work out" and he ended up at Charlton instead.

Spurs were his first choice when he left Liverpool - the reason he didn't join them then was because he felt Santini wouldn't be there long. I'd say that was a pretty good hunch he had, up on a par with Quasimodo in fact.

I think that article shows that there was an element of mistrust of "johnny foreigner" in Danny's decision to go to Charlton rather than Spurs. Whether or not that stemmed from his percieved mis-treatment by Rafa I don't know.

Fair enough if that was his reason, but you have to admit that interviews like the one in the echo muddy the water when you look back at the decision. If he feels strongly enough about something, and obviously he does in this instance, then surely it's reasonable to assume that he would take that into consideration when making that decision.
