I take it with the final hours of the transfer window coming to a close Rafa was unable to grab us a right winger..

 

Its a position that i think we needed to purchase someone.. longterm.. or backup.. Gerrard has done a fine job out on the right but i'd prefer our captain down the middle where he is far more dangerous.

He was playing at the weekend ? did ok ? one very nice run to get set up for a shot on goal ? which he duly missed by miles but as far as I?m aware he didn?t go off injured which is a result!

It's hard to believe that we have been unable to get a decent right winger in ages. Even GH tried to find one for many years and experimented with Murphy, EHD, Heskey. Now Rafa can't seem to get his man either. Maybe we should have signed Malbranque years ago. Although not an out and out winger he gets wide puts in decent crosses and can score a fair few goals. I hope not signing Pennant doesn't come back to hurt us tommorow.

Cisse doesnt seem to have enough technique, or track back enough to play at RW.

Finnan doesnt possess the necessary skills pace and trickery to play at RW..has a decent cross in him,Great RB but is certainly no RW.

Gerrard, can play at RW, but we lose out in the middle, one of the better options though.

Kewell is a LEFT wing, thus is obvious he is more effective on the left...him and JAR at LB, great down that left side..

krompkamp, only saw him vs pompey, strikes me as a natural RB, but cant make a judgement on him yet.

 

Garcia is the best bet on the right imho.

 

Summing up one has to agree that buying quality players during the January transfer window is a very difficult, for obvious customary reasons, but IMHO the mistake of not securing a RW, who would have given us more possibilities and options and different styles of play down that right hand side, was made, and was made during the Summer. We could be closer to the chavs at this time of the season, but everyone errs, important thing is to learn from them and move on. I dont know who failed to secure a Rw for us last summer, may it be the board for not giving Rafa some leeway in exceeding the transfer kitty, or Rafa himself to rigidly observe his mandatory rule, 'not to be held at ransom'.

Sometimes if a player is fundamental to your plans one can exceed the limits in favour of the long-term goal, like we did with Agger, where we approx paid 2mill over his 4mill value...Next summer i am expecting us to buy a very good RW.

It's not like we don't have any right midfielders, we're just lacking a possibility, we don't really have anyone (Stevie aside) who can beat a player with skill or pace on the right, Luis's talents lie elsewhere. I reckon Harry might get a few run outs there.

one point that seems little appreciated is that history shows there are simply less right wingers than left wingers in the true sense. I suspect a geneaology (sp?) expert could provide an interesting thesis on flair in the left-hand/footer.

I still find it hard to believe that we can't buy a decent right winger in the summer or Jan transfer windows. It's one of the positions we most need to strengthen and although I realise other clubs are always trying to get the maximum ammount of cash out of us I would have thought we could engineer a deal in the time we've been given.

As much as I like Gerrard in the middle, for the time being I want him to play at RM.

 

The plan behinds Rafa's transfer dealings might be, that he will use wide midfielders in an advanced role and playing more often with one striker, depending on the opposition.

 

Gerrard, Garcia and Kewell could interchange their positions and give us more possibilities, for sure.

 

Now on to the formation, which - on paper - could produce some beautiful football.

With so many individual talent out there, this could be another way forward. Barcelona's style of breaking down opposition comes to mind.

 

The Downside: Crouch and Morientes look comfortable with another striker at their side.

Exactly how long have we been looking for a right sided midfielder though? Doesn't this quest pre-date Rafa? I think I remember us being linked with Conceicao ?(the old Simao ) in the summer after the treble season.

We don't have a right winger.

 

We have players who can/have played there but it means playing out of position.

Kewell - Left Wing
