Was meant to be the next Maradona a few years back, obviously he isnt if this is his next move

Argentine star Andres D'Alessandro looks to be on his way to England and skysports.com understand that Portsmouth are hoping to seal his signature.

Pompey have already landed eight new faces during the transfer window, but the signing of D'Alessandro would be a huge coup for the South Coast outfit.

Israeli-based businessman Alexandre Gaydamak bought half of the club earlier this month with the promise of substantial funds being made available to manager Harry Redknapp.

Now German sources have insisted that Wolfsburg star D'Alessandro has been persuaded to join the Fratton Park revolution.

On Monday Pompey announced the captures of Wayne Routledge and Ognjen Koroman, which were signings seven and eight following the earlier arrivals of Benjani, Emmanuel Olisadebe, Dean Kiely, Sean Davis, Noe Pamarot and Pedro Mendes.

Now Redknapp is trying to add D'Alessandro, some five years after originally spotting his talents in Argentina.

While with West Ham in 2001, Redknapp took D'Alessandro on trial but he failed to broker a deal to land him - but he now appears close to sealing a deal.

D'Alessandro had been locked in talks with former club River Plate, but Pompey look to have persuaded him that a move to England would be the best option for him.

, Emmanuel Olisadebe,

wasn;t he with a German club? If its the guy I'm thinking of then he's always looks ike Heskey back in 2001 - the same raw power, passion and aggression of Emile at his best for LFC. Why Portsmouth????

I just know that Mönchengladbach have tried to sign him. However, it's a bit contradictory (as usual), so to speak.

Gladbach's general manager Peter Pander (former general manager of Wolfsburg) said yesterday, that he was quite confident - today he said that he didn't have a prayer.

Portsmouth would be funny, though.

He can't be that good is the best he can do is an average club in the bundesliga, and a club fighting relegation in England.

I think it's safe to say that out of the hundred or so 'new Maradona's' that have come out of Argentina and into Europe, exactly NONE of them have lived up to their billing.

Maybe Messi will, but a Pompey player sure as hell will not!

When will Mandarich realize that he can buy as many players as he likes but one day he has to realize Harry Redknapp is a crap manager.

the 'new maradona' predicate is lazy. he was never actually rated like that. Not even Aimar and Riquelme got that.

Ortega got it, Saviola got it and Tevez to a lesser extent. and now messi.

Saviola, now there's a striker I reckon rafa could mould into the star his talent promises.

If D'Alessandro comes over here to Portsmouth and can take to the English game, I reckon he'll be moving again to a bigger club in the summer for twice the fee.

He really is a great talent - loads of ability on the ball and scores goals from midfield; just seems to have made the wrong choices so far; badly advised perhaps? None of the big clubs followed up their interest, and it seemed like he took the first move that came up to Europe.

I actually thought he was doing well in Germany, certainly last season I thought he was performing superbly - whats happened to him since then?

Rafa knows the South American market well though, so I'm sure he's aware of what he can and can't do I suppose.

PS Ortega was brilliant - sublime skills. Never quite achieved as much as he should in the game.

I remember watching him when he was 17 against England under21s and that new maradonna tag was fully justified. Joe Cole was on the same pitch but you wouldn't have known. I'm assuming Cole is the better player of the two now and that didn't look possible then

i was at that game and didn't think he was all that.

As for Joe Cole that night - seem to recall Wilkinson had just taken over the u-21s and he didn't play Cole in the first half and he played pretty well when he came on along with Lee Hendrie in the second.

What i most remember is Carra bailing out Woodgate, who was appalling, on a number of occasions.

Think Harry had him on trial at West Ham so should know a thing or two about him... he's not been special in the German league though, nothing like as good as Hleb and look at the impact he's made this season so far...

Are you sure? I remember watching it and he was brilliant, we were linked with him not long after

I though Andres was the stand-out easily and I didn't even know who he was or if he was meant to be any good. Wilkinson said Cole will never be a top player because he couldn't play CB and Maradonna and Pele could. Something like that.

i remember he won MoM which i was surprised to hear in the pub afterwards as Lee Hendrie had a cracking game and scored the only goal of the match

Possibly one of these players "you have to build a team around2?

If he takes to it, he'll move on in the summer.

Good move for Pompey if his reputation is justified (but then again....)

If he impresses, it wouldn't surprise me to see him move to Spurs in the summer.
