Fifa to investigate Mikel threats

Mikel signed a deal with Man Utd in April

Fifa is to investigate claims that Manchester United and Chelsea target John Obi Mikel has received death threats, reports BBC Radio Five Live.

The Nigeria international, 18, signed for United in April 2005 but later said he had been forced into doing so.

Mikel appeared to temporarily go missing during the dispute and has since claimed he wants to join Chelsea. There is no suggestion that the death threats came from Chelsea, who are still keen to sign the teenager.

"Inside me I know where I want to go and I think Chelsea is the better place for me to be," Mikel told BBC Radio Five Live in an interview to be broadcast in full later on Monday.

United insist they have rights to the player, who is at the African Cup of Nations with Nigeria, and have counter-claimed that he has been forced into saying he wants to join Chelsea.

Fifa is now expected to decide what happens to Mikel, while it has also been suggested United and Lyn could push for punishments, including a transfer ban, to be imposed on Chelsea.

A question to our Norwegian freinds. Is this player as good as seems to be?

And I thought it was only us that did death threats to players

Well the greasy one described him as gold when he first saw him play. As much as I hate Utd, Chelsea should not be able to get away with what they are doing with this lad. He didn't seem unhappy and pressured when he signed for utd.

Good player, but young and raw. Cant see why he would prefer Chelsea, he wont get a game there. ManU are screaming for midfielders and he'd probably get into their first-team quickly.

I think he should find himself a new agent, his current one, s***tu, seems a complete loon.

Heard the Radio Five piece this morning on the news, firstly Kenyon saying the club had no contact whatsover with him and then Mikel saying he had met Mourinho many times recently. MMM?

I think they also mentioned that he'd received a couple of hundred grand and so felt 'indebted' to Chelsea. But Chelsea say they have given him no money.

As posted on popbitch about gollum:

1. when Abramovitch realises how much over the odds he's paid for many of his players (Carvalho, for example, was available for closer to £10m than the £19m paid, and Wright-Phillips would have gone to Arsenal for £12m had Chelsea not stepped in).

2. how unpopular Kenyon is with every club in Europe, which leads to more cases of 1.

3. how much money he's paid Pini Zahavi for how little. Perhaps at some point someone at United should ask why they (Kenyon) paid £30m for Rio Ferdinand when Leeds would have accepted much less.

Are you a Liverpool fan? They may be run by amateurs, but at least they're straight.

(last question not at me btw)
