In the two games we played against Luton and Pompey the lads put in a pretty dismal team performance but managed to get through. Given our consistent form in the CL and the Prem League, why has the teams form deviated so dramatically in the two FA Cup games so far?

I guess the straightfoward explaination is that the opposition have upped their game against us. Plus given our short FA Cup campaign last season, I think the FA Cup is proving to be a new but difficult experience for some of our players. They have to get used to playing in rubbish pitches and against opposition that will play a more high tempo and more physical game than they are used to in the prem league.

I suppose another way to look at it is to look at the specific circumstances of our two Cup games (injuries, fatigue, tatics, etc)

Any thoughts?

2 lousy pitches against teams with nothing to lose.

we played both games at unusual times of the day.

the first game we thought it would be a doddle after we scored and we stopped playing, today we didn't but we never got that killer 3rd goal.

our title of European Champions makes us a potential big trophy for any lesser team we play and we will have to live with that for as long as humanly possible.

Also, top class musicians can struggle when given poor music to play. I think the same applies to football teams. Put a Rolls Royce like the currect Liverpool side up against bad roads, and it'll drive less well than when it's on a smooth motorway (good opposition). Welcome it, it's a sign we are headed in the right direction.

Sign of a good team - not playing that well and still winning games.

Sign of a s*** TV pundit that saying. ;)
