I was wondering if anyone could help me out with the exact story of why we're "der der der der der-ing" Johnny Cash's Ring Of Fire?

 

I think I've read somewhere that it was the urchins who started it, when they were on roadtrips to away matches, but don't know if that's just the truth or not?

there are a few stories....

 

I was told it was the Irregulars who started it.......they also have lyrics off two little boys by Rolf Harris on there flag (Did you think I would leave you dying)

Who are 'the irregulars' ? Genuine question, please excuse my ignorance.

 

 

Groupd of fans who go everywhere......they have a big banner the ther name on it and R's are back to front.....

i love our fans banners when we go away - no other club could do it like we do.. i remember the poor showing from the Chelsea fans when they came here for the CL semi final 2nd leg - they had a few St George flags one of which read "John Terry's Barmy Army" :lol: imagination at its very best..

Many stories, one i've heard the most is what Carragher said that his Dad was on a coach to an away game once and the radio was bust or something and there was only a Johnny Cash tape lying around so they stuck that in and they were der der'ing since...

 

I heard that Carra had it on the team bus once when the players were getting off and some of the fans heard it and picked it up.

I heard that on a European away a lad had to repeatedly run to the toilet as he'd had a curry the night before. Soon the whole plane was der der der der der der der dering as he'd keep running down the aisle and it stuck.

Been reading up on this, another theory is the LASC group got on a coach from the Oakie on a Saturday morning going to a game in London. They only had one of those tacky compilation CDs you get with the Saturday rags and they threw it on and as the booze flowed, it caught on.

have heard that on the coach to Pompey away a year or so ago one old boy put his Johnny Cash tape in and ring of fire came on and people picked it up from there. Was sung a lot in the away matches at first.

Nah lads, sorry to disabuse you of your pet theories.

 

The truth is that "Ring of Fire" was first sung by the fans of one of two clubs ... and it's not Liverpool.

The earliest I can remember hearing it was at (a very cold) Auxerre away in February 2003.

Try as I might - that's the earliest one I can think of too - I've also heard the irregulars story and it sort of fits well.

I have it on very reliable sources that it was the fans of Glasgow Celtic and/or Manchester United who first sang the song so avidly copied by Liverpool fans today.

 

The origins of both claims are shrouded in mystery and it is unclear which has the stronger case however. What is not in doubt is that it was not Liverpool who first sang it. For convincing evidence you only have to read their websites.

 

ManUre fans sang it as long ago as 1958 when several people have very strong recollections that it was sung by a couple of people at least three times.

 

Celtic, on the other hand, say they started it and what's more they say they sing it better than any other set of fans in the world. The exact date cannot be pinned down but it happened in the very early 60s.

 

Sorry about that an' all. ;)

Shame that ain't true cos it'd mean they started singing it five years before it was even released and they might be entitled to royalties? Maybe they should sue for them. Might be enough money there for them to buy their club back.

Good bunch of lads that. Went with them for the Man City away game. I'm a mate of Tage, who's a captain in the Irregulars. Was a great evening in the Oakie after the game I remember. :D
