Charlton Athletic v Liverpool (8pm)

Match moved due to Liverpool's involvement in the Champions League

The game is subject to replays in the FA Cup 4th Round.

That can't be right. That is the cup replay night if it's needed. Can't see the club agreeing to a date that may have to be postponed incase a replay is needed.

If it's been moved to that date then isn't there a chance the Blackburn game is going to be moved from the Hillsborough Anniversary ? Thought the FA had planned to play the Charlton game in April ?

I sincerely hope it isn't then as I am supposed to be going to see Broken Social Scene that night

Charlton chief executive Peter Varney has slammed the Premier League's decision to rearrange the Addicks' home match with Liverpool for Wednesday, February 8th (8pm) at The Valley.

A new date has also been provisionally set for the recently-postponed trip to Newcastle United of Wednesday, February 22nd at 7.45pm - this is still to be confirmed.

Not only does the new Liverpool date come with the possibility of another postponement due to possible FA Cup replays, but the Addicks now have only 22 days to arrange the fixture, and sell tickets, sponsorship and hospitality packages.

Furthermore, Alan Curbishley's side could now face six games in February.

The game with Liverpool was originally called off at the start of the season because of the Anfield club's involvement in the Champions League qualifying rounds.

And now, the decision to rearrange the game for February 8th comes with a proviso - it will only take place if neither side is involved in an FA Cup replay.

The Addicks host Leyton Orient in the fourth round of the competition on Saturday, January 28th, while Liverpool will travel to Portsmouth on Sunday, January 29th. Should either game be drawn, then a replay would take place in the week commencing Monday, February 6th - and the rearranged Premiership fixture would be postponed once again.

"What message does this send out to the fans when a match can be rescheduled with only three weeks notice, and on a date that comes with a caveat?" said Varney.

"The Premier League originally requested the game be played on January 25th, but as that date coincided with Talal El Karkouri participating in the African Nations Cup, it was agreed to look for a new date. Then the league contacted us last week to say that decision had been overturned in light of the additional postponement of our game at Newcastle - El Karkouri's absence was, apparently, no longer a factor.

"We agreed to a request to potentially rearrange the Newcastle game for February 22nd, but we told the Premier League we refused their suggested date of February 8th for Liverpool as we usually have to give the police 35 days notice of a fixture. However, for some reason on this occasion that rule has been waived.

"As well as the short notice and inconvenience to supporters, this new date could also become irrelevant if either side is involved in an FA Cup replay. When there are two more dates reserved for FA Cup fixtures, couldn't the league have waited to see if one of those could be used for the game? There are also two other dates between now and the end of the season that are available, even if Liverpool progressed further in the Champions League, and of course it is not certain thety will qualify for the final stages.

"The Liverpool match is one of our biggest in commercial terms, and yet now we face a race against time to sell packages for a match that would usually sell out - given a reasonable lead time.

"The games with Liverpool and Newcastle were postponed through no fault of ours, and yet now we have ended up with possibly six games in a month, one of which has been scheduled at short notice. It feels as if we are being punished - and if our supporters were upset, I certainly wouldn't blame them."

Different scenario. This game was postponed in august due to our commitments in europe. The Premier League have "no reason" to move the blackburn fixture. And I'm not sure about having the charlton game in april due to the possibility of other games being postponed (west ham away gets postponed if we get to the FA Cup semi's. Plus there is potential of europe then too.

I seem to remember reading a quote from someone at the Premier League that there was a possibility we were playing Chalrton in April which might hinder our chances of getting the Blackburn game moved.

Just found it

Whilst a request would usually come from the home team, in circumstances such as these, I would not anticipate the request being a problem. The problem is not with the request, or the procedure, but simply with finding an alternative date. Liverpool already have another outstanding fixture (v Charlton) to fit in and the week before Easter is also a possible FA Cup replay date. It will all become clearer once Liverpool know what commitments they have that week

Originally from a reply someone on RAOTL received when asking about the possibilty of the Blackburn game being moved.
