Rico Posted January 15, 2006 Posted January 15, 2006 In the 6 matches between yesterday and mid-February, we have to play all of the other teams in the top 6. We did a job against Spurs, so that's one out of the way, but the next clutch of Premiership matches are really going to go a long way in determining our finishing position, I reckon. Just look at what we've got coming up: Sun Jan 22 - Man Utd v LiverpoolWed Feb 1 - Liverpool v BirminghamSun Feb 5 - Chelsea v LiverpoolSat Feb 11 - Wigan v LiverpoolTue Feb 14 - Liverpool v Arsenal Next Sunday's game might be what they call a "six-pointer" when it comes to sealing second. I think it's a bridge too far to really hope for top spot, given Chelsea's consistency, but you never know. I haven't included Birmingham in the "four to go" 'cause, well, they're not a threat in terms of the top of the table, but of course the points would be very welcome, thank you very much. So, whaddya reckon? Really excited about the next 5 games, or really nervous? For me, it's a bit of both. Some huge games there; some heated rivalries, old and new. I'm a pessimist; I can see points being dropped, but I'd love to be proven wrong.
Guest Cardie Posted January 15, 2006 Posted January 15, 2006 (edited) wins against Brum and Wigan, 4-5 points from the three other teams would be good Edited January 15, 2006 by Cardie
Maldini Posted January 15, 2006 Posted January 15, 2006 I don't think it can break our season but it can certainly make it
Puma Posted January 15, 2006 Posted January 15, 2006 Big games there indeed but I must say that one the thing that's hasn't worked for us over the last season is finishing the "smaller" games. That has been much improved this season. Consistency is the thing that we are looking for. I'm sure the lads are well up for these games.
Buzz Posted January 15, 2006 Posted January 15, 2006 I still have a feeling that Chelsea will falter and rather than lose, draw a series of games which can put us back in contention, but, only if we beat ManU and Chelsea, to get back the points we lost at home, beat Brum and get a double over Arsenal. Realisticly we have to win all our games from now untill the end of the season, and I think we can do that, even though I am a pesimist.

Flip Martian Posted January 15, 2006 Posted January 15, 2006 For the first time in years I feel really confident we'll go to OT next week and win. Gawd bless ya, Senor Benitez... I reckon we can get at least 10 points out of the next 5 games. I seriously doubt we will overhaul Chelski; we're going to be a darn sight closer this year though; and make that 2nd spot ours. Will be v interesting next year.
Jon Posted January 15, 2006 Posted January 15, 2006 wins against Brum and Wigan, 4-5 points from the three other teams would be good I'd be happy with that, unless of course we beat the Mancs next week then it's a draw at the bridge and a win at home to the Arsenal Thank feck this run of games is January/February though rather than during our run in as it usually is
Nebraska Red Posted January 15, 2006 Posted January 15, 2006 my brain says 9 points out of those 5 games. wins against Brum and Wigan and 3 draws against the other 3. my heart sees us winning against Man U and Arsenal. regardless though, I do not see these 5 games making OR breaking our season.
stressederic Posted January 16, 2006 Posted January 16, 2006 Some tough games in there. Realistically, we won't win the league this season (though the Magic 8 Ball disagreed back in August), but if we are to haul back Chelsea that game at Stamford Bridge in particular is massive. At the moment, there is no real title race, if we beat Chelsea however that could well change. It's a shame we've still got these games in hand to play really, as at the moment we're only speculating about how far behind Chelsea we'll be. I'd much rather have played the games and have the points. Ok, one of those games in question is against Charlton and I fancy our chances, but the other is still Arsenal at Anfield. I know they have a black hole in the center of their midfield at the moment, but they still dicked Boro 7-0 yesterday. I don't care how awful Boro were, 7-0 against a Premiership side is a hell of a result, and Arsenal will be a tough test for us.
Guz Posted January 16, 2006 Posted January 16, 2006 Mancs and a*** away are the biggest I think. A win next week would be truly sensational. Mind you, 2 points from those two games wouldnt be the end of the world, just to maintain the gap atleast.
