With every game Newcastle lose....

If there really is a clause, then I think this might be the case...

Id rather have Owen than Defoe (who is currently being touted around) for similar money....

Hope Mickey comes home.... (He'll have to settle for No. 11 though or maybe his old 18 shirt)

Personally, neither. But, I would rather have a striker that Rafa feels is right for the team and someone, in Rafa's words, wants to play for Liverpool.

Owen can stay and rot at Newcastle. People seem to forget the not-so-great Owen that lumbered around in his last 2 seasons at the club. That's what he is today. I prefer the memories of Owen when he was world class. Coming back a lot of fans will expect miracles from him when what we'll get is a player who's shadow of what he was from 1998-2001.

I'm pretty sure Rafa wasn't devastated when Mikey left and nor was he as desperate as Souness to sign him, so I have no fears about Rafa trying to sign him. Owen is history, and that is where he belongs as far as Liverpool FC is concerned.

Another Owen thread! ohh what a surprise ;)

in the summer I was gutted we didn't get him.... but little did I realise how many goals we would score from midfield...

I hope he stays at Newcastle... it would be great if this clause that we talk about existed and we didn't even bother taking advantage of it... leaving him there to rue his missed opportunities.. Good luck to him, I hate to see him get injured, but Liverpool are a better team without him..

and which striker is it that does want to play for liverpool?

cisse wants to play for us but isnt that good infront of goal or outside the penalty box, sulks if he aint in the starting line up every week and its rumoured that he wouldnt mind a move if he gets some regular football before the world cup....

same story for defoe - wants a move cos he cant gets in spurs first team and it's hampering his world cup chance

and similar story to michael owens move to newcastle.

similar reason for andy johnson to move from palace and every other half decent forward who might get to play for their country before the world cup.

i think there's only robbie fowler who genuinely wants to move to us for the right reasons - sadly his best days are behind him. Tho he can still net a cracker as today proves.

I wonder if Robbie put in a lot of fitness work and played a good second half to the season whether SGE would consider him?

i have mixed feelings - fowler was the greatest finisher i've ever seen but his best days are well and truley behind him. As fowlers book demonstrates he has a brain the size of a pea but fortunately for us 90per cent of that pea brain was taken up on the art of goal scoring. I think if we have crouch plus one other. Then why not take fowler(providing he does train and work to get back some kinda fitness) as a back up striker...to come on as a super sub - and to be used sparingly for worthy cup games and the sort. I'd take him over pay day strikers like morientes anyday of the week. Least he wants to pull on that red jersey. And all our fowler fanatic fans could have one last erm 'hurrah' over his return to us.

i'm still of the opinion that it'll be owen returning to us in the summer tho.

We are not some sort of charity or benevolent fund - we are in the business of winning trophies, and I don't think that the return of Owen or Fowler will improve our chances of doing that. In fact, with all of the baggage that both would undoubtedly bring, they could actually harm our chances. And in terms of Folwer wanting to pull on a red jersey, I'm sure that 100% of the members of this forum would like to do that too but fortunately, that simply isn't enough. I mean, FFS, we might as well sign Dalglish on again, you know, for old times sake.

The same Morientes that took a pay cut to come play here?

"When he joined Liverpool he had a choice of clubs who were prepared to pay him more money. He could have joined Lyon or Monaco but he wanted to come to Liverpool. He took a pay cut and said he would only be paid in full if he won trophies and scored goals. That shows everyone the hunger he has to succeed and there is no doubt how much he wants to succeed at Liverpool."

i didnt advocate the signing of fowler only expressed an opinion on his ability. re read the first line. hell re read the whole of my previous comment before regurating other peoples put downs on re signing ex players.

Apart from this bit then;

harsh comment on mori maybe but has he been worthy of the wages he's thus far earned was what i was insinuating.

i can only think of the charlton away where i truely feel he put himself about as much as he can do.

i think we wouldnt be linked with owen/defoe if mori were doing as well as he could.

like i said pinhead that isnt advocating his re signing thats expressing AN OPIONION of preference over one striker than the other.

No footballer is worth the wages they are currently being paid.

I'd take Moro any day of the week over Owen, Moro has the ability to link the play up between midfield and attack (big reason for our success this year and Stevie's evolution as a player) something Owen is abysmal at.

Owen is a one trick pony, he's a good finisher but all he can do is try to get in behind, he is a very limited player in every other dept. The morbid one dimensional brand of football we played under GH was solely there to utilise Owen's sole threat ......... and people want to go back to that?!?!

Owen is still a great striker. He just made a s*** decision in leaving us. Real didn't utilise him as they should've, and Newcastle are just a toss team. But even from the subs bench he scored at a f***ing good rate for Real, and injuries aside he's put them in the net for the Geordies. Don't doubt the lad's quality!

The only question that matters is: does Rafa want him at a price we can afford? In the summer the price was wrong, but I find it hard to believe we were only playing at being interested. This summer, however, price might not be the issue. But not because Owen is likely to be available for far less than £17m, rather that Rafa might look at his team and think Owen doesn't fit any more - at any price.

i undertand the first sentence of your reply is opinion and i'd really like to take u to task over the rest of your comment with my contrasting opinion backed up with stats and facts and what not - but this is your opinion and i'm sure there's others out there who'll pick apart every comment you've made with delight to the point of getting off on it.

at the end of the day we have a strike force of crouch mori cisse and pongolle. I hope like every red they succeed. I have my doubts. I have doubts about their desire and ability and i have my preferences over which strikers i think we are after and which ones i'd like to see at the club. I also know that this is a forum of which we fans can discuss are musings - some cant tell the difference.

that was meant for jimmy f - i really should quote

I would love to have Michael back. He made a mistake by going to Madrid, forgive and forget.

Mate, I respect your POV and i'm not one of those who say f*** Owen just b/c he left us.

I just truely believe as a player he is very limited, if we signed him it would change the style of play the team has right now, it would be a lot more of the early balls in behind with a lot of the time possesion being surrendered - Our midfield this year has been far more infuluential in an attacking sense b/c Moro and Crouch give them the platform, they hold the ball up, they make clever passes - Owen cannot provide that. My objection to signing Owen is purely on that reason, I dont disagree that we are in need of a goal scorer, but why not try to sign a striker who is more complete player, there are others out there aprt from Owen
