nbryan1764 Posted January 11, 2006 Posted January 11, 2006 The Miracle of Istanbul: Liverpool FC, from Paisley to Benitez Golden Past, Red Future: Liverpool FC - Champions of Europe 2005 Stand Up Pinnochio I haven't read the first but have read Tomkins book as well as Thommo's. Both are really good though Thommo's is my favourite. His love for the club shines through and there are some interesting views on things that we have only read press opinion on, e.g. transfers, discipliniary issues
Will Posted January 11, 2006 Posted January 11, 2006 To repeat... Of course they are Two of them are about LFC, and one is about Thommo. Bound to be good.
pjwy Posted January 11, 2006 Posted January 11, 2006 The Miracle of Istanbul: Liverpool FC, from Paisley to Benitez Golden Past, Red Future: Liverpool FC - Champions of Europe 2005 Stand Up Pinnochio I've read all three..they are all well worth buying. However,I've also read Guillem Ballague's book entitled 'A season on the brink' and this is absolutely special imho and gives a really intimate insight into Rafa's current work at the club.Buy all these books but if you can only buy one then I'd recommend the latter!
Cunny Posted January 11, 2006 Posted January 11, 2006 Miracle Of Istanbul is good, basically a season review, with back history covering the Houllier and Evans years and a bit on Liverpool culture (music, fanzines, scallies etc...) Easy read.
Gunga Din Posted January 11, 2006 Posted January 11, 2006 there is a book called "The Kop" by Stephen F kelly, a new updated version. what makes this book particularly worth reading is that there is an interview with me in it! but aside from that it is a very good read.
bigdave50uk Posted January 11, 2006 Posted January 11, 2006 i think we should have a seperate book forum, one were users can give their views of any new books that come out. think it would save all the seperate topics that seem to have been created latley

Mikael Akerfeldt Posted January 12, 2006 Posted January 12, 2006 wasn't that impressed with the Paul Tomkins book tbh. I had read the books by Balague and Llorett shortly before and they both seemed to be much more insightful particularly the one by Balague which has lots of its content direct from the players and management team.In comparison I thought Golden Past Red Future while interesting in places was more descriptive of the events of last season and not so informative of what went on in the background. Fair comment really, all I would add though is that if you enjoy Paul's regular columns on YNWA, lfc.tv etc then you'll enjoy his book.

Easy read.Yep, got that off my brother for Christmas. It's a bit hastily put together (it's a review of a rollicking season, rather than a rollicking review of it) and the Liverpool culture chapter is inserted almost painfully into it, but as said before, you can't go wrong.
Poolfrog Posted January 12, 2006 Posted January 12, 2006 wasn't that impressed with the Paul Tomkins book tbh. I agree about the Tomkins book. It's OK, but it's taken me about three months to get just over half-way through it. Basically it's fairly thin on content so stretches everything out and takes a long time to get anywhere. Style-wise too, he seems to use italics and brackets on every line and loads of subordinate clauses, so it doesn't flow particularly well. It is worth a read but I doubt it would appeal very much to non-Reds' fans, which is probably the true test of its value as a written work
Rushian Posted January 12, 2006 Posted January 12, 2006 wasn't that impressed with the Paul Tomkins book tbh. As it's a book written by a fan and not a professional journalist with contacts behind the scenes it's not a surprise there's less of what you describe. Where it wins out over those books is in giving a fans viewpoint of the season and has some very good analysis of where we were going under Houllier and where we're heading under Benitez. Also slays a few sacred cows such as the hypocrisy and inconsistency of various media pundits. Think the books as a whole sit well together.
uppsala Posted January 12, 2006 Posted January 12, 2006 I'm halfway through "Rafa Benitez" by Paco Lloret. Despite some of the bad reports from this forum about the ending of the book, I'de say it gives a very good account of Rafa's early career from player to coach from relegation to champion. Makes me think just how lucky we where to land Rafa!
L19red Posted January 12, 2006 Posted January 12, 2006 the Rafa Beitez book is better than GPRF by the narrowest possible margin.
Stom Posted January 12, 2006 Posted January 12, 2006 Have just read El Macca - detailing Mcmanaman's time at Real Madrid - I know a lot of you on here are not great fans of him for the way he is perceived to have left etc etc - but those comments aside, the book is interesting, informative and really well written.
