Jose hits out at Reds

By James Pearson - Created on 6 Jan 2006

Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho has claimed Liverpool are just a one trick pony as all they can do is defend.

The Reds recently kept an impressive 10 consecutive clean sheets in The Premiership prior to conceding against Everton, but it is not their ability to protect their goal that has the Portuguese tactician flustered.

Mourinho believes it is difficult to hit the back of the net against teams utilising Liverpool's style and that you have to out-think your opponents rather than playing with your heart.

"In fact they defend very well," explained Mourinho, "But they offer nothing else other than that.

"It is very difficult to score goals when you take on a team playing with that style.

"If you are playing that sort of team you have to do it with your head. You have to take your heart out and place it to one side.

"If you play with your heart it is practically impossible to get past their defence.

"And by playing that way, they create a good number of chances and get at you on the counter-attack."

Liverpool will have the chance to exact revenge for their 4-1 thumping by The Blues at Anfield when they travel to Chelsea on February 5, live on Sky Sports 1.

Hey, if that one trick pony knocked them out of the champions league and went on to win old big ears, I 'll settle for that any day.

two things...two things money can't buy...class, passion and style.

Two words

mourinho fears us. Alot.

He really does, rarely doesn't.

The more Mourinho talks about us the better - it means we are in his thoughts in terms of a danger to the current Chelsea bandwagon and that we are doing things right. I'd rather he was quoted discussing our positives and negatives than never mentioning us as that would mean we were mid table and no threat to him.

Are we heading for a Wenger Ferguson mind games type scenario - Come on Rafa :) .

He was asked about Liverpool by the Portugese press as we're playing a Portugese team in Europe and he said that we defend well.

Quick, hang him until dead.

Slooooowwwww news day for Sky. Rubbish attempt at trying to create a contentious story using quotes out of context. He is complementing us more than anything.

Whether you like it or not the league is richer (heh) and less boring with him in it.

The saddest thing for me about Chelsea is that despite their unprecedented financial advantage, they are merely functional and efficient. And that's a crying shame. All they can do is play the percentages. They have not pushed the boundaries of football any further and they have not brought anything new to the game at large. For example, they are not a patch on the Arsenal team that went the season unbeaten recently. Chelsea are so unadventurous given their great financial position. Shame on them! Billionaires, but all they can do is keep it safe and steady.

This is to say nothing of character, moaning, lack of class etc. I'm limiting my comments to their style of play. They do not set anyone's pulse racing because it is functional. OK, they are well organised. But give me a break! With all that money they have a great opportunity to really go after a new dimension (e.g. current Barcelona).

But Chelsea are nowhere near that level of excitement and class, and it's largely why they have few friends.

Have you seen how often Chelsea are discussed on here?

Sky have just re-spun remarks Mourinho made on a Portuguese website when asked about Benfica's chances against Liverpool in the CL. In their original context they weren't particularly contentious.

The man's a pr!ck just the same, but there's not much in this.

Here's the original quote:

"I believe that Benfica has the capabilities to go far," Mourinho said. "They [Liverpool] can be eliminated, but also they can eliminate Benfica.

"Liverpool is a team that defends very well, defends exactly very well. It is very difficult to score goals against Liverpool. To play against them you must play with your head and not just your heart.

"A team that plays against Liverpool with its heart is not capable of scoring goals and suffers against them on the counter attack. Both are great teams and they will be two great games."

The CL final - which we qualified for after beating Chelsea, Jose - showed how stupid that article is. How many times in the last year and a half have we scored goals when needed ?

He's a t**t, i don't think he believes what he's saying, he's just putting it out there so the press print it.

Create chances? But i thought we could "only" defend?

Fecking bellend...

Who gives a flying feck what style of football Chelsea play other than Chelsea fans? I could not give a shiny one.

Mourninho probably hopes we'll respond to 'mind games' like this by changing our style of play to something more 'attacking' or TV friendly - thus making us less consistent and less of a threat to them. That kind of thing seemed to work a bit too well on Gerard Houllier, but hopefully it won't on Rafael Benitez.

Totally correct, IMO. We're best advised not to be taken in by it.

Except the way we play now is poles apart from Houlliers philosophy.

1141731[/snapback]

Exactly what I thought.

The way we have taken teams apart in the past few months, is testament to how far Rafa has taken us forward. We are convincing, and play very good passing football, using the full dimensions of the pitch, with ability to vary our attacking threat, using Kewell's trickery out wide, Crouch and Gerrard's excellent link play in the center, and Alonso's superb ability to orchestrate the flow and tempo.

I can only come to a conclusion if anyone really believes what Mourinho (allegedly) says: they must be watching videos of (the successful period) of Houllier's time at Liverpool!

So he is admitting his team are a bunch of morons based on our last 4 Champions League games against them

What concerns me is 'one trick pony'.

I mean, how many ponies do any of you know that can do an array of tricks, let alone one?

agree with both Lee and Cunny I know it's a cliche but he really has started writing all of Benetiez' motivational speeches for that game already

I hope he hasn't. That's what he wants. I suggest we go to stamford bridge, stick 11 behind the ball and just counter attack. It's obvious they can't cope with that.
