CaptainXabi Posted December 26, 2005 Posted December 26, 2005 Completely agree. He must get tired of the barrage of shots he faces every game though.
muleskinner Posted December 26, 2005 Posted December 26, 2005 Played well but I wouldn't swap him for Pepe.
StevieC Posted December 26, 2005 Posted December 26, 2005 Great saves but another keeper made to look better than he is because he has to make 60 saves a game. In the last few years keepers at relegation candidates have looked great becasue of the amount of saves they make and never get blamed when their cr@p teams lose anyway. Russel Hoult was once tipped for an England cap FFS and look how good West Brom have made Kirlkland look. That Kewell save was somethig else though.
baja the hut Posted December 26, 2005 Posted December 26, 2005 His save off kewell was the best save this season....
R A Softlad Posted December 26, 2005 Posted December 26, 2005 He pulled off some top class saves today - particularly the one early on for Harry. Playing behind a 0-3-3 formation can't be easy.
hagi_complex Posted December 26, 2005 Posted December 26, 2005 To be fair to Given, he's been saving their arses for a few seasons now.
Benitez Posted December 26, 2005 Posted December 26, 2005 maybe it'll take Given going to Arsenal, for Newcastle to finally wake up and see the problems everyone else sees. Without him, they'd be scrapping with sunderland.
stressederic Posted December 26, 2005 Posted December 26, 2005 Sooner or later another team surely has to come in for him. Playing in goal for Newcastle must be the most depressing job in football.
Owen1978 Posted December 26, 2005 Posted December 26, 2005 Quality keeper, feel sorry for the guy, suprised wenger, ginsoak arnt knocking down the door to sign him!
hagi_complex Posted December 26, 2005 Posted December 26, 2005 The Press Association are calling it an og. F*cking ridiculous. Shower of blind c*nts.
Guest Les Howard Posted December 26, 2005 Posted December 26, 2005 There certainly isn't anybody BETTER than Given, that's for sure. Did he sign an extension last season? There was talk about it but I can't remember if he did or not.
New York Red Posted December 26, 2005 Posted December 26, 2005 Yep, he's superb that's for sure. Credit where credit is due.
G Richards Posted December 26, 2005 Posted December 26, 2005 Given is a good goalie but I'm not sure how good. I think he's made to look better than he is because he's always got a chance to shine. Defo wouldn't swap him for Pepe. If Shay gets a move to somewhere like Arsenal then we'll perhaps see what he's made of. Right now he looks good, but that's because it's virtually shooting practice. I would agree with the Hoult analogy.
chrisbonnie Posted December 26, 2005 Posted December 26, 2005 dont forget he has to save Irelands arses in international football as well im irish, and i swear, id give him a brazilian passport just to give him a chance of going to Germany, the lad is superb, and why oh why none of the "big" clubs have never gone for him ill never know

Maldini Posted December 26, 2005 Posted December 26, 2005 I didn't realise we had so many Irish on this forum
jimmylibel Posted December 26, 2005 Posted December 26, 2005 Personally I think Given is seriously overrated. He is an awesome shot stopper, but his positioning and decision making are quite suspect. The amount of times he pushes the ball into dangerous positions after making a good first save is unreal. Good goalies put those kind of shots around the post/ over the bar, Given knocks them back into the danger area. He was also criticised quite severly in the leaked Chelsea scout report.

Doesn't that mean he actually _is_ good? What else does a keeper have to do to be good rather than look good?

What else does a keeper have to do to be good rather than look good?1127887[/snapback]I know what he means, it's like people saying Friedel and James are better now than they were at Liverpool. It's a completely task playing in goal for a big team, you might only have to make one save a game, but you have to maintain your concentration. At smaller clubs more goals are expected to be conceded so you're not under the spotlight as much. Friedel and James are making just as many errors and playing just the same as they did with Liverpool but the expectations are lower and there are less people watching.

Given makes fantastic saves that make the papers because he has to face so many attacks. He does concede but no one in their right mind would blame him- ergo he ends up looking better than he is and his defieiencies are covered up such as the ones Jimmy Libel mentioned or that his kicking under pressure is the worst I've ever seen in a goalie- and that includes Frode Grodas.
