Ripley Posted December 20, 2005 Posted December 20, 2005 Who will have your support? Presumably Chelsea?
Swan Red Posted December 20, 2005 Posted December 20, 2005 John has stated previously that he can't wait for Chelsea to overtake Manchester Uniteds and Forests record in Europe
Ombudsam Posted December 20, 2005 Posted December 20, 2005 If Chelsea go out in the second round of this competition it damages their European standing - if they go on to win it it increases it. Makes it easier for them to tempt Shevchenko and Adriano to Stamford Bridge. They have only really secured one proven world class player thus far. Barca roundly beating them will continue to make it difficult for them to look like European giants and will make our league progress next year a little easier as well as keeping our trophy haul above theirs in Europe. I can't see how, even practically, backing Chelsea is a good thing.1121379 yes but barca players do things like bacheels and nutmegs and 15 pass moves and that goes against everything John L stands for. You can't expect a man to sacrifice all his principles on a whim. For me the equation goes. I hate chelsea. I want chelsea to lose. Not very complicated i know but heartfelt nonetheless. Imagine losing to chelsea or chelsea winning anything. it's too horrible.
Gilps Posted December 20, 2005 Posted December 20, 2005 Barcelona are also our rivals for European trophies so the argument about Chelsea enhancing their squad on the back of European success applies to them as well.1121395 It would hurt a lot less to see Barcelona lift another European Cup than to see Chelsea lift their first. Only your hatred of Cruyff's footballing philosophy could blind you to that.
Stevie H Posted December 20, 2005 Posted December 20, 2005 That IS the greater good! More seriously. Barcelona are also our rivals for European trophies so the argument about Chelsea enhancing their squad on the back of European success applies to them as well.1121395 disagree. barcelona are not our rival in terms of european trophies, we've won comfortably more than they have. we're chasing madrid now.
Stevie H Posted December 20, 2005 Posted December 20, 2005 Makelele, surely?1121417 would give them cech, makelele, crespo, gallas. maybe even veron although he was on the downslope from the mancs when they bought him.
John am Rhein Posted December 20, 2005 Posted December 20, 2005 disagree. barcelona are not our rival in terms of european trophies, we've won comfortably more than they have. we're chasing madrid now.1121416 Well that's true - although you wouldn't know it given the respect Barcelona (European Cup winning equals of Aston Villa and Red Star Belgrade) seem to command - even from Liverpool fans, FFS. But what I meant was that Barcelona are among our rivals for future European trophies, including this season.
Cobs Posted December 20, 2005 Posted December 20, 2005 disagree. barcelona are not our rival in terms of european trophies, we've won comfortably more than they have. 1121416neither are Chelsea by the same token. Unless Man U are involved, i look at these things from a Liverpool perspective - and i think it increases are chances of retaining our trophy for Chelsea to knock Barca out.

Only your hatred of Cruyff's footballing philosophy could blind you to that.1121413 It's not just Cruyff. That whole club and its supporters has the same attitude.
Stevie H Posted December 20, 2005 Posted December 20, 2005 i don't agree on a football front because i think we'd have a better chance of knocking out barca over two legs than chelsea, and i don't agree on a practical front because i don't live surrounded by f***ing gobsh*te barcelona fans.
cymrococh Posted December 20, 2005 Posted December 20, 2005 (edited) Makelele, surely?1121417That's who I'd say as well, but Knox mentions Crespo in another thread. And don't call me Shirley Edited December 20, 2005 by Paul Caruso

Unless Man U are involved, i look at these things from a Liverpool perspective - and i think it increases are chances of retaining our trophy for Chelsea to knock Barca out.1121428 But to be fair, you're almost as much a Chelsea fan as John is.
John am Rhein Posted December 20, 2005 Posted December 20, 2005 There's also the argument that English clubs doing well (even Scum U) helps because it increases/maintains the English League's 4 qualifying places and, therefore, increases our chances of qualifying. However, that's negligible compared to my hopes that Barcelona will crash and burn
Cobs Posted December 20, 2005 Posted December 20, 2005 i don't agree on a football front because i think we'd have a better chance of knocking out barca over two legs than chelsea, 1121433why so?
John am Rhein Posted December 20, 2005 Posted December 20, 2005 But to be fair, you're almost as much a Chelsea fan as John is.1121436 That's right. You'll often see me and Cobs on the Shed of a Saturday afternoon.
Swan Red Posted December 20, 2005 Posted December 20, 2005 I also think we may be getting a little ahead of ourselves in thinking that Chelsea will be an easier team to get through than Barcelona.
Cobs Posted December 20, 2005 Posted December 20, 2005 But to be fair, you're almost as much a Chelsea fan as John is.1121436bolllocks I'm a much bigger Chelsea fan than himPosts merged:I also think we may be getting a little ahead of ourselves in thinking that Chelsea will be an easier team to get through than Barcelona.1121442i'm just going from the psychological hold we seem to have on them in Europe 4 matches and they can't score - gotta be worth something, no?
Swan Red Posted December 20, 2005 Posted December 20, 2005 John if as you suggested in the other thread that teams exist solely to win trophies why does it matter how they do it?
John am Rhein Posted December 20, 2005 Posted December 20, 2005 John if as you suggested in the other thread that teams exist solely to win trophies why does it matter how they do it?1121448 It doesn't. Unless they are Barcelona or Man United, of course
Murphman Posted December 20, 2005 Posted December 20, 2005 i'm just going from the psychological hold we seem to have on them in Europe 4 matches and they can't score - gotta be worth something, no?1121443 Are you suggesting Mourinho is 'running scared'?
Stevie H Posted December 20, 2005 Posted December 20, 2005 why so?1121439 1) barca's defence and goalkeeper are not a patch on chelsea's 2) rafa knows them well and knows how to play against them. just a feeling that we'd stifle them and have the weapons to beat them over two legs. i don't think for a second that we'd beat chelsea more easily than we could overcome barca. one game at a time accepted of course.
John am Rhein Posted December 20, 2005 Posted December 20, 2005 bolllocks I'm a much bigger Chelsea fan than him1121443 No way! Were you at Chesterfield in 1978? I've got Kerry Dixon's thumbprint!
Swan Red Posted December 20, 2005 Posted December 20, 2005 i'm just going from the psychological hold we seem to have on them in Europe 4 matches and they can't score - gotta be worth something, no? I am concerned that that is being overplayed they were lucky to score the goals they did in the league last season and they beat us comfortably in the league this. They also beat us in the Carling final so I am not sure I see why playing them in Europe is that different. But for Gudjohnson missing that opportunity, which on another day he would have buried Istanbul would not have happened for us. records also have a habit of being broken
