I watched the Milan derby last night and the answer to the Munsters' defensive frailty was on show: Jaap Stam. He was awesome. Started at right back then moved into the centre when Nesta went off. Despite all the usual defensive suspects being out Milan defended well and Stam scored their second equaliser. I know they conceded three but one was a ludicrous penalty, Dida was at fault on the second and the third was well taken.

 

The Munsters meanwhile labour with that joke Ferdinand who will never be in the same class as Stam. And why? Because blotchy face knew the balloon was going up on his dodgy transfer dealings and he shipped Stam out pronto. Conflict of interest for certain.

He's not quite the player he was, but I still think getting rid of Stam was the worst move Ferguson made as United manager, even worse than signing Veron. He was a collossus for them.

Getting rid of Beckham hasn't proved to be too useful a deal either. They have won Feck all since he left.

Beckham wasn't playing all that well for a bout a year and a half before he left. I think ferguson wanted to play that 4231 formation and beckham didn't fit. he thought he was getting Ronaldinho and kewell i suppose. As well as that he wasn't accountingfor solksjaer's injury as he was filling the RM role well

Stam's drugs bust was part of the whole Holland national team thing.

 

Ferguson has never worked out how to defend at the highest level-he didn't take Jocky to the 1986 World Cup for example-but he got rid of Stam for non-footballing reasons. If he was taking drugs at Old Toilet (which I doubt) it seems they have a plan for dealing with that anyway.
