thinking about this - from the Trent thread - and the players who've left the club of their own accord or want & how the supporters viewed the departure, the reaction when they came back (if they did) etc. Obviously only players of stature, Flanagan leaving (for example) we're not arsed about - 

Keegan - there's the whole sunglasses, black eye, Tommy Smith rumour. In the end no-one was that arsed since we got decent money & upgraded. A bit before I was really aware though so some old c*** like @Murphman may have to put me right

Clemence - loved, welcomed back in May 82, was wished all the best

Rush - everyone was ok with it, and he came back and was skills

Souness - everyone seemed ok about it

Suarez / Torres / Mash / Coutinho - all spoken of badly despite us getting good cash for them all

these are only a few I can be arsed to think of

I think Owen is the only one ever I've felt animosity towards - and that may be because of who he joined.

Joining Real isn't always the dream they sell you - ask Güler, Endrik, Odegaard etc.

Remember Keegan and being devastated. Did not last long because his replacement did alright.

Missed Clem initially because Brucie's early games were likely to induce a heart attack. Soon forgotten and in keeping with tradition, he got a good reception on his return as an oppo keeper.

Souness was the one that hurt more after the event. At the time we had just done a treble and were confident of continuing where we left off despite him going but it soon became apparent that the impact was greater than anticipated because big Jan took a while to get going and Everton actually had a decent team for a change.

McManaman was the one that really annoyed me at the time. We tried to sell him to Barcelona and then he did a Bosman with Real. Time has probably healed a lot of this pain but he was still an Evertonian in a red shirt and he is a useless pundit.

Rush was understandable, it did not work out for him and he returned, We got good money for him and it allowed us to buy Barnes, Beardsley and Aldridge in the meantime. They did alright.

Torres ought to have been an issue but given that we had Hodge as a manager and were playing like donkeys, it kinda made sense to go to a club that might win something. I think the fact that we got serious money for him and his form declined after leaving us mitigates the anger at him jumping ship. I wish we had seen him and Suarez in tandem because Andy Carroll was not an adequate replacement.

Alonso was the one where I really thought the club had let us down. I know Rafa may be partly responsible for this but the guy got us and would probably have stayed if he had been valued in the same way we saw him. Do not begrudge him going to RM but given his background, it was a surprising move for a man who grew up in the Basque country. Still welcome at any time at Anfield as far as I am concerned

Mash. As with Alonso, it is hard to feel animostity towards him. I got why he left and believe he still is a fan of us. His dedication of the victory over Man U merely confirmed it in my eyes. Loved him as a player when I first saw him at the 2006 World Cup and was over the moon when we signed him. For me he falls into the same category as Suarez

Suarez - our madman and genius. I wish he had stayed longer but grafedul for the time he was with us. Probably the most talented player I have ever seen in a liverpool shirt and certainly the most problematic. Even his leaving felt right given that he was banned for half the season. We got decent money for him and whilst I wished he had stayed to be part of a Klopp team, the toxicity of his remaining might have made it impossible.

Coutinho. Bought for 8 million sold for 140 and allowed us to by Allison and Virg.

nice - yeah agree on Torres, we were a f***ing state & he was s*** after he left. Xabi, still love him. Don't fully remember the whole 'him leaving' circus but he was a prince on the field, and masch I can understand it too, he was a bit of a dick but having read Reina's autobiog - the owners were just outright lying to all the players around then.

I rarely begrudge a player who leaves for (good) money, means we can use it to plug the hole etc (or waste it on Andy Carroll)

At least with Keegan he gave us a years notice,no pissing about,made it clear he wanted to go abroad,which was unusual back then. And his final season we were a fookin spawny deflected goal away from the treble,he was great.

I've read he got loads of grief after announcing he was leaving. His form dipped for a while and fans blamed it on the move. Then he was amazing the European Cup final.

Think some got upset with his antics when Barca played us, but overall he gets an easy ride from most fans i think 

Mainly because he was magic

Torres leaving for CFC was an absolute sickener.

The goal celebration when we beat CFC 1-0 just after he got subbed off on his debut will live with me forever though.

Well it's near 50 years ago and i was only 12,my memory is hazy but i do seem to recall he announced it exclusively in one of the sunday rags

McManaman is a blert but I don't really feel anything about that move now, I was pretty young when it happened and I now understand his reasons - being low-balled by the club, trying to flog him to Barcelona, his mum dying etc.

I was quite relieved when Coutinho went, the noise around it was really starting to do my head in, plus it has proven it to be one of the best bits of business in our history.

Torres really stung - he went to the worst possible team and we were at such a low ebb. The fact that he was largely crap for them is immaterial - he's a rat and it bugs me that the club have, to a degree, tried to rehabilitate his reputation.

I was gutted about Alonso, Mascherano and Suarez but don't really feel any animosity toward them.

Think Torres kind of seems sorry for all that s***e but he won medals at that lot. 
I kind of find myself ambivalent over him and most of them now apart from Owen cos he went to the c****.

Sterling probably one of the worst because he went to a club that was our rival and said things like “no one wants Liverpool winning the league” at awards when he actually played for us. s***house

I’d completely forgotten about Sterling, that was unpleasant. Having that absolute whopper manage us didn’t help of course.
