Child support/maintenance questions

My eldest is off to Uni this year after turning 18... I am aware that if a child goes to University despite being over 18 you still have to pay child maintenance whilst they are in any form of further education. Which is all good and understandable. 

My question is.... Does that maintenance still get paid to my ex or do I pay my eldests share directly to him seeing as he will be 18 and an adult and most likely living away from home? Therefore he won't be around at my exes house to cost her anything. 

Anyone on here had to do the same?
