Wondering what the longer term impact will be on broadcasting games given the nfl on Netflix Christmas experiment? It was certainly on in ours with the usual mixed bag of family that ranged between active to passive to no interest in the NFL. But it was also 'on Netflix' and something of an event. The latter is obviously an annual one-off thing, but the global reach of netflix as a single streaming platform, able to live broadcast sporting events to anyone with a subscription, regardless of region in the world, is clearly going to shape the future of broadcasting the EPL.

(as an aside, even as a reasonably keen follower of the Chicago bears - I'll try to watch their games, will read the athletic pieces, and listen to CHGO podcasts - I'm a follower of 'the NFL' as a brand. I follow the league, am sold the stories of the biggest personalities, their stats and achievements etc, without being particularly aware of the nuances and distinctions between teams, histories, rivalries etc. I imagine for the vast majority of global followers of the Premier League this is what the EPL is to them. It's the package as a whole, the main personalities and performers, rather than what it means to those of us who have been in this for decades... I'm increasingly simply a fan of Liverpool.. I don't really watch anything that doesn't include us or have an impact on us... Whereas I'll watch nfl or redzone as a casual consumer)

All that to say that amazon prime had a go,but doesn't have the reach of Netflix, and it's clear the Premier league benefits from packaging up it's international rights to various regions and broadcasters, but there may come a time when a single global streaming platform owns the broadcasting, able to stream any game at any time to all regions everywhere

It's a long way from when it was either ITV at 2.30pm or the BBC at 3.00pm for the Sunday kickoff (no idea why the time was different for each channel!)

The idea that people follow footballers rather than clubs has been a thing for a while though, Madrid had their Galacticos and then Messi / Ronaldo became statement signings for their respective leagues, I could see all that holding a huge appeal to a global broadcasting entity like Netflix.

We currently have one such player who fits into this category and I reckon a large swathe of the overseas supporters would happily don a Barcelona/PSG/Inter Miami shirt if he ended up playing for them down the line because they view football as a form of entertainment firstly and them supporting a crap team through thick and thin holds no appeal whatsoever.

All I want is the ability to legally pay for a package that will give me every Liverpool game in all competitions for a monthly fee - and the ability to buy others on a pay-per-game basis.

The standard cost of having Sky+TNT+Prime to be able to see everything is as expensive as an Anfield Season ticket these days. It's f***ing ridiculous.

Getting daft over here as well. I have YouTube TV for some of the PL games on cable, Peacock for the rest. Paramount plus for CL and Carabao, ESPN for the FA Cup.

I do get every game out of those 4, but the cost is getting ridiculous.

It's bonkers that you can have access to all matches overseas, yet we're so limited over here. Out of interest, how much does it cost for all the above, interested to see how it compares to here.

And still only gets you about 50% of our games.

7 of 40 games either played or where coverage has been announced are in the 1500 Saturday slot - so 17.5% - aren't on legit telly.

Agree with this... But would even go back to the original Ronaldo and, at the time, Michael Owen (one of the reasons why the fanbase struggled with him. Like it or not that was a time when his profile was much bigger than our ability and the only thing that was keeping Liverpool in the wider global consciousness at a time when united the the PL were beginning to go global).

This is more me being the slow learner of course but the whole 'EPL' thing was never a thing for me until I realised that it's comparator is the NFL and I consume the latter the way the EPL wants a global audience to consume its league (and why the EPL sees the Champions League as its competitor)

Think it's about £80-90 a month here at full price, so pretty similar

Following players, not a single team, has always been a thing over here, in all the 4 major sports. I still can't get my head around it.

I remember reading about why stats was such an important thing in baseball and it came down to the fact that no one got relegated so once you had a fair idea of who was winning the “league” it was all fairly boring and without any kind of peril. So stats became a thing.
“ We’ve got the best wide round about turn over catcher with his left hand over his right shoulder facing north only using his first finger and thumb in the league so BOOM!”

All you need to know about "competition" between broadcasters is that 10 years ago I paid ~£30 a month to sky for PL, League Cup and CL plus got FA Cup on terrestrial. Then BT got the CL and I would need to pay them £30 a month for that without a decrease in Sky's cost.

We need three subscriptions - BUT it changes by year.  FA Cup and Every PL game is 5gbp a month

CL (includes Europa) is the expensive one as sport is an addon to another service so you need to pay 14gbp a month

Then the Carrabao is 7.50 gbp

so in total I pay just over 25pounds a month for every Liverpool game.
