He was not well and getting old, so sadly it could well be true.

Met and chatted to him outside the ground a few years ago. Was clearly pretty frail then and had a club minder with him.

For some reason I can't quite remember I had to meet up with some random mate of a mate fella who was also a friend of Nathaniel Clyne and was collecting tickets he'd left for him. I assume he was getting one of me as well.

After Rowdy went on his way this lad goes to me 'Who was that then?'. f***ing d****ead.

So sad to hear this. Shanks had just started to move out his original legends when I started watching the reds, and big Ron was one of these.  A great footballer.

Saw the doc on lfctv when they got the 65 team together in woolton cinema to watch the match back on the big screen and the way he gulped and had tears in his eyes when he saw himself lifting the cup…

 

The women all adored him btw.  Seen me own nin go a bit swoony at the mention of his name.

After we beat Bolton in the LCF was walking down to Wembley Central and saw him sat on his own in a Maccies with a cup of tea, probably waiting for the crowds to die down.  Stopped still and stared for a sec and got a big smile off him and a ‘yeah it’s me, away you go’ nod.

Big Ron, RIP, was Captain when I first got hooked on the Reds.

Fast forward 40+ years and I’m at an event here in Belfast with The Saint and Ian Callaghan. Chatting to the two of them afterwards and mentioned that when I took Boots Jnr 1 to his first game, we had went up to the ground before the match. Outside the ground this mountain of a man walked towards us. I clocked who it was right away but my lad had no idea who he was. That was Ron Yeats!! Kid had no idea who he was (but quickly sorted that) I told St John that I was too star struck to speak and he said, “Oh big Ronnie would have loved a chat”.

Opportunity missed. RIP Captain

It's a common error, repeated in at least one of those pieces, that Big Ron took over the captaincy immediately on arrival. In fact he only succeeded Dick White, who had moved to right back, as captain when the latter was injured and missed the away game at Rotherham on Boxing Day.

ah - interesting. Guardian in its obit even said he took it over on his 1st game
