Long distance trains in the USA

Has anyone travelled cross-country/long distances via rail in the USA - from say New York - Ohio - Missouri - Louisiana - Georgia - Return to NY via the East Coast although the route would be flexible? I am looking for travel options other than driving and definitely not flying. Is it a decent way to travel? I think I could purchase a multi-journey ticket but I haven't researched enough to know if this would be feasible given multiple train companies may be involved in any cross-country route.
