Was mad when you think about it today.

This is the guy who was all about not conceding and whose main success until then had been crafted around a formula of sitting deep, long balls and counter attack.

And then he fielded Smicer and Gerrard in a two man midfield flanked by Kewell and Diouf and asked a thoroughly finished Henchoz to play a high line.

Wtf happened? What was his endgame? If he knew how to not play s*** football all along, why did he wait four years to really give it a go? With the worst backline he had had since his first full season at that.

I'd nearly say none of the last 20 years would have happened. Only for Gerrard literally dragged that team, kicking and screaming into 4th in houlliers last season,

I don't want to talk ill of the dead, but my god he was a charlatan of the highest order. Awful, awful football

A charlatan doesn't take an awful team and rebuild them to win 3 trophies in a season then getting 2nd in a league, beating top teams like Roma, Barcelona and United home and away.

We may have won in old Trafford, but we never "beat man utd up" edit apologies, I misread your post there you never said beat up

I'd even go as far to say, the best we ever played under Houllier, was when thommo actually had the reigns, when Houllier wasn't well.

We won at Old Trafford twice without conceding, and beat in a final. Houllier done a brilliant job for years.

you might not approve of his playing style, but calling a man of such integrity a charlatan is just unbelievable

dont take it from me, take it from this lot:

Club was a mess when he took over and apart from treating Fowler like a dog he did an excellent job of making us competitive again. We weren’t always easy on the eye but were effective. Ferguson’s lot consistently struggled to deal with us, we won trophies and got back to the top table of European football.

Sadly against the behemoth Utd were and the brilliant team Wenger assembled it wasn’t enough to win the league. Not sure he was the same guy when he came back from his heart thing. Should probably have knocked it on the head and let Tommo take over full time.

Come on man. I can't look at Houllier with anything other than warmth and happy memories. We had some of the best moments in years under him after years in the cold. He realigned the club. The football wasn't always brilliant but there was something fantastic going 1-0 up knowing the game was over.

He did a great job for us. He wanted to be liked a lot - which maybe led to the fluent style of attacking football he moved towards when he was under pressure/being criticised.

But he was not a fraud. He was a real football man and very gracious.

And I should know having had the pleasure of spending several hours in his company

We had some brilliant days/nights under Houllier. Still remember fondly getting having to work the night of the Owen Cup Final and being half pissed

We went from not even having our score read out on the wireless the night that the mancs beat Juventus to knocking out Barcelona in a semi two years later.

More than fair.

To return to the OP. I dunno but it was great for 3 or 4 games.

Kevin Lisbie was annoying.

i think he opened up at the start of the previous season but we kept drawing 2-2 cos Owen kept missing and then we went solid at Man City and Owen got a hat trick.

That was then that.
