Buying a house direct from owners

Anyone ever done it? Recommended/not recommended? 

House that we've liked for ages went off the market a month or so ago and now we're in a position to make offers, we wondered about popping a note through their door to see if they're still thinking of selling. If so, would it be better to bring an estate agent in (Ombudsam etc) or just negotiate on price via solicitors? Or just between the two parties?
