Pompeii v Herculaneum

Myself and the Missus are doing a delayed trip, originally to the US of A, with Bootser Jnrs III & IV. Four days in Sorrento then a cruise. 

What’s the verdict on both sites? Is Vesuvius worth a toot?  Also, is Salerno worth a visit for its WWII history and Museums? Oh, and is Carthage worth going to?
