The company I work for has formally announced an employee scheme to encourage us to have electric cars (apparently it's to aim at being a carbon-neutral business). All very noble etc. but I'm a bit conflicted about them - I know not burning fossil fuels is a good thing, but I can't help thinking that we'll still be churning out loads of rubber particulate with tyre wear and tear, still be road users anyway, and further down the line, the enormous batteries will be adding to some super landfill somewhere. Are they really going to be that much better?

I'd also be wary of buying one when they are relatively new to the market - I'd assume that nobody can really know at this stage whether any of them are worth a long-term investment because, are they robust enough to still perform with 80k on the clock or when they're three years old or more...

Does anyone know here anything about this stuff (I'm a definite refusenik as far as car enthusiasm & knowledge is concerned)?
