Though it was time we had a thread for this.  I'm sure we all wish the actual match thread would go away, and with everything that's happened since it deserves a standalone thread. 

And after this latest revelation, I really hope they're not allowed to get away with it

Cadot’s 30-page report, delivered on Friday to the office of the French prime minister, Élisabeth Borne, refers to Hillsborough in a section on police intelligence before the final on 28 May between Liverpool and Real Madrid. The section recognises first that Liverpool supporters have not been known for violence at matches. However, it then continues: “Reference to the Hillsborough tragedy in 1989 – 97 deaths – for which the responsibility of the [police] was pointed out, led however to the drawing up of a firm policing arrangement, to maintain order in riot gear, in order to be able to respond to a risk of collective phenomena of hooliganism and havoc, as had happened in Marseilles on 13 June 2016 during the England-Russia game.”

They're apparently not even taking Athens as a precedent, or Madrid or Kiev.

Somebody high up in the Paris police force or government has driven this approach, and they have to be identified and made to take responsibility.

There was no logical or data driven basis for doing it so it has to have cone down through the system from one misinformed individual with significant sway.

You couldn’t have planned this with a range of inputs and voices, this type of unfounded bias comes from one key person and flows down through the ranks.

This predates Macron. There were probably CRS (special anti-riot squads) and gendarmes (under control of the army, not national police force) at the game so you have all the hard nuts.

The 1997 cup winners cup game was 'high risk' according to UEFA. Met a lad in an LFC top who had been attacked by the police for no reason and was wandering around dazed before kick-off.

I've tried to play devils advocate to the wording regarding Hillsborough. Maybe the inference was the policing strategy was in part designed to avoid bottlenecks and crushes but I can't make that fly as they did exactly that.

Putting 2 and 2 together to come up with 6. Interesting they mention the England Russia game, when this final was supposed to have been played in St Petersburg and France currently spending more on Russian energy than they did before February.

Yeah, seems the lesson they learned from there is to police it and then lie about it in exactly the same way

He may well have done but these tactics are not new or specific to Macron and his government.

The senators investigating are still pushing for more answers and want to pin this on someone. Latest comments :
