Done my usual survey and round up of various publications and websites end of year lists to try and get a view on the overall top albums of the year from a critics' point of view. A few observations... there seemed to be a tipping point about four or five years ago when it was suddenly deemed OK to actually put albums by female artists generally further up these lists than they ever used to be and that seems to have continued and now be the norm (clearly a good thing). Rock seems to be pretty much dead as far as these lists are concerned. The self titled album seems to have gone into hiding. As a genre hip-hop continues to dominate in terms of the sheer number of albums appearing in the lists generally but other than the Tyler The Creator record none of them have troubled the list of lists - as if everyone's listening to rap but no one seems to be able to make up their mind which ones are the good ones. And there are two or three albums that got very few nominations but scored big points when they were nominated (Self Esteem, Lana Del Rey, Wolf Alice).

Personally I find it a bit of a weird list as there's a fair few that I've listened to a lot this year that I'm surprised are not on this list and a fair number that I've not heard at all...
