My car is playing up - it's either a problem with the battery or the alternator... radio flickers on and off, AC turns off, and the engine starts dying. I drove it round the block at it felt like the battery  / engine was going to conk out any minute. Battery light flashes on and off...

I want to drive it to a garage, but not sure it will make it.  I have one of those mobile jump starter kits, and this charged my battery before when it had completely died. Is there any reason why I shouldn't try to use that thing now - before the batter is dead - to try to charge the battery some more? Tried googling it, but couldn't find out if it's ok to jump start a car when the battery isn't fully dead... Really I just want to know if I risk damaging myself or the car by using it...
