Being the age that I am, I get a bit nostalgic thinking about football from the 70’s and how great (I thought) it was. Don’t get me wrong; there were great moments of skill, and players who given their raw talent would do well in today’s day and age.

But, the teams of today would absolutely hammer them, Brazil 1970 included. I watched a few highlights of matches tonight, and it’s really eye-opening. I’m attaching a clip of the highlights of their 4-1 win against Czechoslovakia in that World Cup and I thunk it is well worth a watch. But I can say this about the level of play and this clip in particular.

The defending is criminally bad.

Some of the giveaways are pub-league stuff.

The shooting is really poor. There were some shocking misses.

The CZ’s were surprisingly good in comparison.

Some of the fouls will blow your mind. Absolute dead-on red-cards and play just gets waived on.

Tostao wasn’t nearly as good as I remember, nor Carlos Alberto.

Rivelino was really special; he stands out.

The commentary is hilarious, particularly by the English commentators; Roy of the Rovers sound bites.

Anyway, here’s the clip. The England-Brazil match it worth a look too.

If players of yesteryear were given the nutritionists & training regimes of today, the pitches of today, played to the stricter rules of today re- the tackles that are no longer allows etc etc - I’m sure they could hold their own with today’s teams.

it’s just football - the goals/pitch/balls are the same size.

I agree. The natural talent adapts to the cards that they are dealt. The stars of yesterday would thrive in any age.

These old matches are worth watching though. They are pretty fascinating.

Watching the referees back then, almost, and I mean almost, makes you think today's refs are pretty decent.

They seemed to not give a sh*t. Just along for the ride.

Puts Maradona's genius into context. he was kicked to pieces every game, played on rubbish pitches with heavier footballs and God knows what his nutrional regime was like. Incredible incredible talent

I believe he was taking a range of..."supplements"

Not disputing his genius at all tho.

Keowns iconic moment right there after the penalty, whenever he’s on telly now thats the first thing I remember about him!

That and when he destroyed Jake Humphrey

Keown to nistlerooy was funny

Was a great moment

Steve Bennett - appalling referee, in thrall to the mancs as they all were back then

although if that pen had gone in that was the ‘invincibles’ sunk

It isn't actually funny given the context and a bit Brent-y all around but it was grim by Humphrey given he will defo have known

hadn't heard that before - is there a video of it in amongst that? That website is worse than the Echo for adverts and bulls*** all over the story you're trying to read

Boss that. Bennett was definitely in the employ of Mr Ferguson. Any team managing to overturn that level of sh*t from all sides, commentators, refs, crowds and still manage to win leagues... It's not to be sniffed at.
