Anyone ever done it?

I currently rent a mate‘s house in an area  of East London in which I could probably only afford to buy a two-bed flat or, at a push, a small house.

Every time I start looking at buying somewhere, I just get a bit depressed. I could get a decent place somewhere I don’t really want to live or a not great place somewhere I do. I get such a sweet deal on the rent here and I love the area, so I’m no hurry to get back on the ladder. The rent is low enough for me to save a decent amount a month and I still have the proceeds from selling my house a few years ago.

My current thinking is we’ll move out of London within 5 years and I’ve got it into my head that I want to build a mid-century-style house. I’ve got a mild obsession with that era of architecture and I love the idea of building an eco-friendly version of a classic Laurel Canyon home.

I’ve seen Grand Designs, I know it very often ends in divorce, but how hard is it?   How do you look for land? How do you borrow money? How much do architects cost? All that stuff.

Might be totally unrealistic, but I’m daring to dream.
