I think he needs his own thread.

Absolutely. I think my only issue with him is that with a name like that he should be Welsh but isn't

Splendid tonight. Perhaps assisted by Mourinho's negative tactics - I thought that front three would be more of a test for him but I should have known Jose better.

You really couldn't ask anymore from your 5th choice 19 year old. He won't have the luxury of playing against a flaccid suet pudding like Kane every week though.

Composure is such a huge thing playing that position and he has it. He makes you feel like he has things under control. As a fan that’s great to see!

He’s a big strong lad, 6”4 and I noticed him win a few then Kane give up on a couple of physical battles, and he won’t play a stronger forward.

Also showcased a couple of really nice long passes too which led to chances, so excited to see where he can go and feel less worried about the CB situation now.

We are in a great position, where you want your club to be - two young academy players in Jones and Williams pushing the experienced pros for their jobs.

That is how it should be in an ideal world and the way that you build long term success.

That one where he intercepted a pass then one-touched a 30m pass for Salah's chance initially thought was Fabinho

Also Neco and Kelleher looking promising. The Academy has done a fantastic job

My nephew plays for Kidderminster Harriers U-17s and he (even though he's a Utd fan) had nothing but good things to say about Rhys when he was at Harriers. Said he was great with the youth lads, more so than the older established players.

I went to see Rhys play against York City earlier this year (and lost)...

Must be crazy for him to now be so involved with the champions and debuts in the league and champions league. He looks brilliant and a massive boost for Jurgen as well as Curtis, Kelleher and Neco

There’s times I think I’m still to see him doing anything brilliant but that’s cos he just keeps things dead simple. He’s not the fastest but is just nice and steady.

Had that f*** up with the header early in the second have but then just wok everything after that. Some massive headers. Good lad.

He's great in the air, but his ability on the ball is good and I think he really reads the game well. The number of times he made the right decision when to be aggressive and intercept was outstanding tonight

defo

First couple of games he played well but I was still a little hesitant as he looks like a kid not a CB. I thought maybe he'd play a couple fo good games then implode & not be all that; we've seen plenty of players break through & never go anywhere. But starting to feel like he could be the real deal.

Jones clearly has a future, I like Neco despite a lot of the twitter nonces having it in for him, and Rhys looks like we've got a proper player in the making

I think he was responding to a shout that hadn’t bean curd by anyone else.

man - didn't realize that was his League debut - he played all EC games...

Interesting that he was chosen over Phillips, guess it's because he's got a future at the club and he's a better footballer

Yeah. Long term his pace will be an issue I think, especially the way we like to play but there's been plenty of centre halfs who have managed there way around this. He's nails in the air.

I think now he’s shown he’s physically and mentally up to it, Williams will be the regular choice. Phillips felt like a stand in but Williams could be more. I hadn’t noticed Rhys being especially slow, the way I had with Nat.

Still absolutely raging at Pipnasty here.  The moment Leo started this thread the first response should have been "NOT INJURED!".

I think Phillips could do more of a specialized job. A physical team in cups could be the right opposition for him.
