Listening to music files through a hi-fi

I don’t currently listen to any music files on my hi-if system, but I am due to be getting a load of rare and ‘Dutch import’ type stuff on a memory stick, and have loads of stuff I’ve put onto iTunes over the years from various odd sources such that I only have them as digital files

I’d like to play some of them from either my laptop or direct from a USB through my hi-fi system. I’m sure I could just run some kind of cable from the laptop into my amp, but is this a sensible way of doing things? Is there another gadget/device I ought to be using?

Happy to spend a few quid if need be, but don’t want to go mad. All sensible comments welcome as I’m not quite sure where to start
