UK Hospitals and Visiting

My mum has been in hospital for a couple of days, and my dad has sent a message saying he can visit at 2pm.  She is not well at all, but I am concerned her condition its worse than I thought. What has triggered my alarm is the fact my dad can go and visit, I thought visits were not allowed? Does anyone know the latest.
