Granny flat

Anyone got any experience in building a granny flat-type thing?

We are looking at something small for an elderly relative - a one-bed single-storey thing with a small kitchen, shower room and living room. We have the space if we knock down our fairly run-down double garage for a stand-alone property on our footprint

Can anyone give even a vague ballpark figure as to how much something that might cost to build, or how straightforward it might be from a planning perspective?

At the moment this is just an initial thought, so only looking for a vague idea to start with
