Sad news

Saw him score a hat trick away at West Ham once

A brilliant career in an unusual way

decades ahead of other foreign footy pundits

Ah, that is sad. Seemed like a decent fella and from what I could tell had a real fondness for us.

Here's the hatrick Molby is talking about. Just about the worst 'perfect' hatrick I've ever seen.

Fuuny though, I vividly remember as a kid recreating in the garden his celebration for the third, wheeling away towards the corner flag (garage).

Sad news. You could tell he loved every minute he was with us.
I was at West Ham for that hat-trick. Also remember him making a nuisance of himself and scoring against us a couple of times in the early 80s when we struggled to away draws down at Brighton.
RIP

Listened several times to his podcasts. Mick always talked about us with fondness in his voice. About us and about Cadiz, his second love .

Ahh, gutted about this. I lived in Spain for a while in the late 90s and he was a brilliant broadcaster and much loved out there. Came across as a lovely fella. RIP.

Yeah, people I know who've met him said he was one of the nicest guys

Spanish TV is showing the 84 final against Roma as a tribute.

His death is front page news here. The papers are all Coronavirus and Michael Robinson today.

One of my mates (crystal palace supporter) who lived in Spain for some time is properly gutted about the news.

An Everton-supporting mate here posted something on Facebook. Can't see him doing that for any other of our players.

It's mad watching old matches and still feeling nervous even though you know what the result is.

I was lucky enough to see him play (pre LFC) a couple of times for Ireland in the 82 WC qualifying campaign. He scored against both Cyprus (6-0) and France (3-2) at Landsdowne Rd. Was full of strength and will. Very skilfull, but not great pace.

Loved it when he signed for us.

Very sad.

He was loved here in Spain. He was pretty much the voice of football.

Do you know how he became so popular? He was clearly immersed in the Spanish culture and was taken in as one of their own. Professional (British Isles) footballers aren’t particularly known for their linguistic skills, but he seemed to have mastered it as well as being comfortable in Spanish society.

RIP Michael.

I wasn't here when he first became popular as a pundit/presenter, but it seems like he just had an ability to connect with people and he offered something different to what was on Spanish TV at the time.

I think he loved Spain and that was clear, which didn't hurt his popularity.

The Sid Lowe piece on him in The Guardian is great.
