These are the pots as they stand at the moment with the last 3 qualifying games to play tonight - the 3 clubs not in bold are probably going to go through but it could be Apoel, Lask or Cluj instead. If any of them won, they'd be in Pot 4 so Lyon, Lokomotiv and Genk have a small possibility of bumping up a pot.

Spurs in the same pot as Real seems a bit mad, as does Chelsea's Europa League win getting them in Pot 1.

Chelsea being in Pot 1 doesn't change much.

 

If the EL winner didn't get into Pot 1 as of right, it would probably go to Benfica (Portuguese champions - Portugal is the next highest country ranking after Russia).

 

Chelsea's ranking would put them in Pot 2 - so all that would do is take out an easier team we can draw from Pot 2 and replace it with one we can't.

Its marginal and might turn around by next season, but its not like the Portuguese teams have done anything of note in the past 5 years.

Basically Benfica and CSKA were in the same CL group two years ago. CSKA beat them home and away and then got the Europa League quarter finals.

Hadn't realised how hard it is for lower ranked countries to ever move up.

 

Top countries with more teams will usually get more ranking points even in an average year than countries with fewer teams below them.

I mean look at the recent seasons - 

 

EC winners have been from England (4), Spain (8), Germany (1) or Italy (2) since Porto won it in 2004 - runners up have all been from those 4 countries too in that same time.
