We clearly have a total colossus in the middle now. He could become the greatest ever in that position for us. So, in the big picture, how does he rank so far in the best we've had in the modern era?

I quite liked Mark Wright but he was always crocked. Not sure Phil Babb belongs in this conversation though!

 

Van Dijk is the best centre half I’ve ever seen, but it’s just the talent vs longevity and trophies argument. I remember having the same discussion about Suarez in 13-14. That it’s the best season I’d ever seen from a Liverpool player but how could you rank him ahead of Kenny?

 

VVD is a hybrid best of all of them. He’s the dominant size and heading of Hyypia, with the finesse and cool of Hansen and the leadership / organisation of Carragher. And none of them can match his long range passing.

 

If he keeps up this level and we win stuff he’ll be the best.

Wright doesn’t belong on that list. Maybe a secondary list with the likes of Hysen (for one season anyway) and Henchoz and Gillespie.

 

By the way, I’d be tempted to put Steve Nicol in the top list.

I'm 37 and I can safely say Van dijk is easily the best centre half I've personally seen pat for us.

 

He's like a taller Paul Mcgrath.

 

I do believe that Joe Gomez can reach the same level as van dijk. I thought his early season form was outstanding. He didn't look at all beneath van dijks standard. If anything, he often out performed the big Dutch man

It's a bit hard to know how good wright really was. It felt like he was an island of sanity in a sea of s***houses and buffoons. But ultimately not quite good enough to raise the level of the players around him either and perhaps just a bit limited to look really good when the rest were faltering.

 

Don't think he'd have looked out of place in a top notch defence though.

I agree on the Gomez shouts - like Van Dijk he really has absolutely everything. Wheras Virgil is physically bigger and stronger, Gomez is incredibly quick. The potential of that partnership is incredible, best in the world.
