Unwanted books

I've reached the point where I need to clear a load of books out of the house, I can't justify the amount of space they are taking up any more and as I keep getting more and more of them, something's got to give... I really don't want to place them anywhere that means they end up in landfill, my local library doesn't take donations. The best option I can see at the moment is either putting them up for sale on ebay (a lot of effort for not much financial reward) or giving them to an Oxfam bookshop branch (but will any that they don't want end up in landfill anyway?).

 

I've had a look at prison schemes but they tend to want manuals and textbooks rather than novels, biographies etc.and they usually want them to be sent individually to named individuals (so high admin overhead and some cost to me).

 

There is a Books to Africa charity which looks like an option but I was hoping that they might end up a bit nearer to home and not wrack up air miles...

 

What other options are there?
