mp3 vs WAV

ok - so I know mp3 isn't as sonically excellent as WAV but what's the real difference?

 

Bleep is doing 50% off all Warp downloads till midnight. There's loads I want and I accept I can't buy everything I want on vinyl as it'll cost hundreds. So in one example they have mp3 for $3.50, 16-bit WAV/FLAC for $5 and 24-bit for $6.50

 

On a single purchase it's nothing but if I'm buying 10+ then I'm not sure whether to make the 'saving' and get all mp3 or go for WAV, will I really notice it? Or are there other good reasons to go for WAV - like does iTunes then further compress, and thus downgrade mp3 more?
