dorgie Posted December 31, 2018 Posted December 31, 2018 RIP. A bit before my time but clearly one of Shankly’s key players in the 60s. Over to Murph for the ynwa obituary. https://www.liverpoolecho.co.uk/sport/football/football-news/liverpool-legend-ian-callaghan-pays-15612928
Metro Posted December 31, 2018 Posted December 31, 2018 Remember him well. And he played for England at one stage. RIP.
New York Red Posted December 31, 2018 Posted December 31, 2018 Ahh sh*t. RIP Peter. A great player. England WC 1966 squad wasn’t he? He was definitely on the short list for 1970 squad but got cut at the end.

meredithmathieson Posted December 31, 2018 Posted December 31, 2018 My Dad’s favourite, too. Went up to the Forest of Bowland once when he ran a pub up there. My Dad got to chat with him. Spot on fellah. Had a cabinet with his caps and medals in it and a photo of the 60s side where Rowdy Yates literally looked twice as wide as St. John.
Bootle Buck Posted January 1, 2019 Posted January 1, 2019 Pure Class. One of Shankly's men that helped put the club where it is today RIP Peter.
Bootser Posted January 1, 2019 Posted January 1, 2019 Sad news indeed. Like some other Forumites he was a boyhood hero. RIP
Murphman Posted January 1, 2019 Posted January 1, 2019 My first memory is of him in the 1965 FA Cup Final team, a history making side which I can still name without pausing for breath , I also remember him playing for England and he was cut from the final squad in 1966 along with Gordon Milne., I was only about 10 but remember him as a really skilful and tricky wide player and everybody knew he was a great player, Shankly adored him. He came from Preston and owned a petrol station in his old town, I remember badgering my dad to fill the car up at his garage, even though it was 20 miles North, it's funny how things from your childhood stick. Heighway replaced him and was definitely an upgrade but there weren't many people Heighway wasn't an upgrade on, RIP Peter Thompson
JRC Posted January 1, 2019 Posted January 1, 2019 Lovely, skilful footballer, played with his head up and a straight back, trusted his skill and pace to beat a man. One of those wingers who understood his role, always contributed, maintained width, good delivery; not one of those flaky, one game in five speed merchants. A gent and an early hero. RIP.
