I thought midfield would be straight forward. Keita hasnt fired yet and I’m sure he will. Lallana is back and I thought he’d be done. Gini has gone up a level and I thought he’d be on the bench.

Henderson

Fabinho

Gini

Shaq

Keita

Lallana

Milner

Ox (next season)

It’s a pretty solid pool.

What are the ideal options for the scenarios? Here a few.

Weak team:

Top 6 team:

Cl semi, second leg when 1-0 up from first leg:

Still want that 10 who is as good as our front three.

In the meantime, Fabinho and wini look like good options for nailing down those 6 and 8 spots. Hoping for keita to be able to fill the 10 gap until we get that special guy in. Shaq lookd like he can do a job at Anfield until then though. Maybe with more gametime Lallana might look like a player again. He's not there yet though.

Was agreeing with you until the lallana bit

We can be really selective about our buys next summer, the positions that need strengthening are reducing all the time and we have major depth.

Number ten type of a very high level who can play in the front three (Fekir type). Moreno will likely go so a backup left back, but we may promote from within there, and aside from that it’s hard to pinpoint major needs.

If Fabinho and Keita work out then midfield will be set.

lallana can't play in the front 3/4 anymore, just too slow and ponderous

best i see for him is a backup for wijnaldum, he has the silky touch, but i doubt he has the strength and it's not a position you want to lose the ball in

as it stands we have gini/hendo in holding roles, ox/keita in linking attack roles, milner/fabinho in allround roles and we're lacking a number 10 countinho replacement/fekir option

We need to buy genuine quality for those positions now. We have enough work horses and are lacking a real world class player in there. we definitely need a 10 and depending on how good Keita actually is we could use another. I think if we had the Chelsea midfield we would win the league.

Fabinho and Gini are our best two at present.

I'd exect Keita to kick into gear sooner rather than later.

Shaqiri has been excellent too and I'd play him every home game there against all the non-top six teams as we need as many wins as possible to win this league.

Henderson and Milner on the bench and very good subs.

Ox would have been great.

Hate using a defeat as an excuse to bump a negative thread but it’s just not good enough.

Shaqiri needs to play as much as possible but he’s not gonna he picked in the big games away from home, so we are crossing fingers that Keita turns out to be great.

That midfield tonight was shocking.

The issue was Lallana offers nothing any more - was hoping he'd be able to play his way back in but he's finished at this level

As you said, we need Keita to find his feet pretty bloody sharpish

I think it all comes back to the midfield. The front three are shadows of themselves atm, but that's when you want your midfield to step up and put a few chances on a plate for them.

We needed Keita and Fabinho to need no time to acclimatise to this league and Klopp style of play. That’s impossible really, so our best hope was to have Henderson Milner and wijnaldum fit and firing.

Can't start a fire without a spark.

Still missing a spark

It's not just a spark, we got nothing from the midfield tonight. The midfield 3 were clueless, Robertson and Arnold added nothing and Mane looked like it was his first game of footy. Wijnaldum has totally lost his form, Milner looked out of it and Lallana...

Klopp has his work cut out for him before the next CL game. Hopefully, Sunday's line-up is nothing like today's.

midfield is a huge concern, but upfront Firmino has lost his mojo, Salah is miles off last season's form and the bloody full backs are atrocious with their use of the ball. ah well.

some things are obviously going right, and every team has an off night, but we just seem way off the level of last year in terms of pace and quality

There’s a reason Klopp was trying to restructure it in the summer. Stood out like a sore thumb when we were looking forward to playing Real Madrid.
