As I'm buying a place upstate I'm going to need a car. Now, I don't particularly like cars and when it comes to the mechanics...yeah that's not for me.

So what the f*** do you do when buying a used car? I need something somewhat decent as the winter weather up there - the Catskills - can be 'choice' - so something AWD or 4WD I need.

I've looked around on the net & choices seem to be: private seller - you have no real assurances; used car lot - the reviews for most of these guys are f***ing awful, but that may be because people are buying lemons & it's their own fault; or a used car from a dealer, but this is the most expensive option.

I've read to avoid cars that have had accidents - seems pretty obvious yeah, but there are accidents & there are little twangs. But I'll look for something with a clean slate there. It's also been suggested to either bring a mechanic with you (I don't know any mechanics) or take the car to a dealer to have them once over it.

I assume buying a used car in the US is little different from doing so in the UK - so does anyone have any decent pointers?
