I’ve yet to connect with it, yet to feel the motivation one should associate with a start to the campaign of Played 4, Won 4.

It might be the hangover from last season or the form of our attacking players but - and this international break isn’t helping - I feel like I’m lacking commitment despite our best start since 1990.

Gomez is in brilliant form, the two fullbacks continue to represent far more than should be expected of them and Van Dijk is, well, immense.

Maybe the Champions League will be the catalyst

I know what you mean. By the first match in 08/09 I was already pretty wild, by the time we scored the last min winner v boro in the first home game I was up the wall. Think all the adversity against Rafa added to it. Absolute backs to the wall.

13/14 also felt a bit more like it was ON from the first game. Maybe it’s just circumstantial, maybe it’s the strength of city. Like in 05/06 I was never invested as much in the league campaign due to chelsea’s strength.

Part of it is the hangover from a crazy good April in the cl quarters and sf's, then the disappointment in May - What could have been, especially after such a bright start to the final.  We played some brilliant football - exceptional, but when Salah went off in the final our form nosedived...... and hasn't picked up since, despite the results.  Yes, we have 12 points, but we have had the easiest four games of the three current joint leaders of the League, or Spurs or Arsenal - only city, arguably, have had an easier set of games, so ...

I dunno.  The forwards look knackered, Mane aside, the mix in midfield isn't at all right and there are some concerns over our creativity in there.  Buvac didn't come back and none of us know the long term impact of this.

But.

The defence, as Earl as pointed out, has been brilliant and for the first time in eons, we have decent cover across all four positions, and yes, I am counting clyne/gomez/milner as cover at LB....
If we agree that class is permanent, then all of the forwards will soon spark and when they spark together ......

I'm cautious.  Maybe we've been burned by being all balls out emotional in the recent past and gotten stung for it.

Play Spurs, then see where we are again.

Repeat.

Takes a while to find the flow.

I’m watching in the usual interest but about 10 games before the competitive instincts kick in.

But looking forward to the PSG game. Haven’t been over in ages.

I think football quality expectations have been set at a very high level by the second half of last season.

We played brilliant football week in week out and haven’t done the same yet so far this season despite the points tally. Our attacking play hasn’t been up to standard.

I also think we are expecting a title challenge this year and aren’t getting over excited. This is a good thing but when we lose, we need to stay equally level.

I'm not sure we can keep the clean sheets we have been and play like we did last season. Think the team is evolving which may not be as exciting but hopefully will be more effective.

a lot of it is kiev hangover I think. that really hurt.

Yeah. Plus the World Cup ended up being great and it was five minutes ago. The wait and craving for the new season wasn’t there this summer.

i was going to the Brighton game nervous because City had dropped points and it was a chance to go 2 clear. In August. Sorry Earl. This is the most excited ive been about a season in September in years

And 13/14 finished with a similarly unfortunate climax to last year’s CL campaign.

We’re not yet in full flight but winning games and I could do without another Devon Loch finish to our season.

*Pulls chair closer to Earl's*

*Clasps his hand and leans forward*

"Let's talk mate. How are things?"

Doesn't feel right feeling this level of nerves about dropping points in August and September. f***ing City.

It's already at the point of being relief as much as joy when we win.

I'm the opposite. Can't wait for our games then brick it when they start...real focus on the league for me, reckon I'll be calmer in the cups

As someone mentioned, City are part of this

I’ve felt really nervous for every game bar West Ham. And even then I was strangely nervous for that beforehand.

Smashing Spurs would help.

Feeling nervous is good, every game feels like a must win already

It's your brain protecting itself, nobody can go 9 months with the kind of adrenaline burnoff we had for the last few months of the season. Plus we haven't really been that great so far.

I think as these games have all been ones we were expected to win, it’s also more a case of job done than anything to get too excited about. If we beat Spurs it’s going to go up a few notches.
