Land-(well, path)-scaping question

Anyone any experience of using loose slate chippings instead of gravel to fill in a pathway? Can't make my mind up if it's a bad  idea or not. As they are flatter I think they might be a bit less stable to walk on and I'm also not sure how much longevity they have.  And being thinner than gravel will they split and crack so that I'm left with a pile of dust and splinters in five years' time?
