Yesterday marked a bit of an anniversary for me. 40 years in the NI Civil Service.

How things have changed. Back then we used carbon paper, had a typing pool, had internal transit envelopes for post, no computers,, tagged papers together in real files, tea trollies, refills for pens, called managers Miss/Mr, had a reprographics section, official seals for embossing papers, In/Out trays.

I started on 31 May 1978. Began in Elderly Care Branch - Finance Accounts Branch - Falls Road Social Secuity Office - Andersonstown Social Security Office - Personnel - Incapacity Benefits Branch -Office First & Deputy First Minister targeting Social Need OFMDFM HR - NI Assembly Enterprise Trade & Investment Committee - OFMDFM Parades &Emblems Team - Establisment of Victims and Survivors Service - Department of Agriculture New HQ Relocation Team - Department for Communities Provision of Social Housing.

Worked with a great many decent hardworking staff. Learned a lot about people and people management. Keep it honest, I once had to tell a member of staff, accompanied by his TU rep that whilst he was very capable he was a lazy bastid. Ho who’s TU rep laughed. Keep it fair, be decent and appreciate of people and you get it make ten fold. Sadly quite a number I knew have died over the years.

Worked for some real w*****s too. Clueless fops who were obviously promoted beyond their capabilities. There are a few whom I believe would be described as despicable.

Job security has always been good but the pay is keek. I currently earn a massive £11 more a month than I did in 2011.

Biggest kick for me has always been the satisfaction of directly helping someone. I await my knighthood
