Getting access to your kids

Got a mate - has 4 children with his partner (not married). Long story short. She was violent. He left. She has now married someone else and is denying him access to his kids. He's in a bit of state, unsurprisingly - anyone been through similar? Is there a prescribed process (aside from tying yourself to the Palace of Westminster dressed as Batman) to go through? He's not getting a lot of joy in terms of action having raised it with social services.
