Occasionally we get bad smells in our loft space. Upstairs, generally after someone has been to the loo. It's rare, but it happens. There's a pipe (looks to be about 6 inch wide) in the loft space that exits through what looks like a roof tile vent (?).

We have been told that the issue might be to do with siphoning and possibly wind direction or air pressure and that the issue could be resolved by fitting an AAV (air admittance valve) inside the loft to the vent pipe. At present we live with it. It's eased a little if we flush a few extra times and, oddly, if we run our taps for a length of time.

Anyone have any experience of this?

Ta, etc.
