With talk of VVD being made captain, I was thinking about how SG took over.

 

My memory is one Euro game at home he was suddenly the skipper. I can’t rmwmber why the switch was made and when.

Mine too but Gerrard was a no brainer, if you want to cite 'leaders of men' there haven't been many better than Steven, Turkey alone made it the right choice.

Sami always felt that the armband was weighing him down, because there is such a hype around it in England. He was relieved to pass it on. This at least is what Sami said at the time.

I like Henderson and I value his place in the squad as a player, but I must admit I don’t like him being captain at all. He’s not strong enough as a leader and I think him holding that position at the club is kind of indicative of our soft underbelly that appears from time to time.

 

We need to add more character and more ‘nasty’ to our flair. VVD and Keita will both bring some of that as well as outstanding ability and needed playing qualities.

Having looked it up, as Hightown Phil said, Olimpia Ljubljana was the game, UEFA CUP 1st round, the game before we lost 2-1 at home to Arsenal. Basle was the season before.

Just watched this film.

 

First time I've watched any highlights of that City game or the Chelsea game. Still hurts like f***.

 

Always nice to see the CL final and Olympiakos stuff again though.
