Coincidences, religion and mysticism

So. I'll preface this by saying that I am a stone cold atheist. I've never really been unsure of it, even when I was a little kid. The existence of God never really made much sense to me. The mysticism surrounding religion made even less sense. Why would a supreme being play this elaborate game with the children he is supposed to love? Why is there any need to worship any entity, even a God?

Would God send messages to people? Do spirits exist? You all know the usual questions and supposed mysteries.

But I have to admit that since my mother died there has been things that have stuck me as strange. She was a traffic warden when she worked and it was always a running joke about how she would book people and let loads off for the silliest reasons. Anyway, after she died, I had to go to Barry to get her death certificate. It's a nightmare parking down there but there is one, just one, parking spot in front. Lo and behold, I pull up and the spot is open. What the hell?

Well on my drive back to Cardiff, I put the radio on. The car was rented and the stations were pre-set. I pressed the button to change it and "Spanish Eyes" comes on. By Al Martino. Her favorite song. But cynical me blew it off.

So, yesterday, I'm sorting through a bunch of my old stuff and I have a pile of Viz comics. The pile tips over. The one looking right at me has something about Rodney Bewes in it and a picture of him. Then, he's dead today. He hasn't been in my mind for at least ten years. Easily.

There have been other things that have happened. It just makes me wonder. And I'm battling it. But maybe I shouldn't.
