My handbrake had a problem and my car rolled down a hill into someone's hedge. Came back from walking the dog to find it wedged in among the trees. It was a palaver getting it out but not much harm done to the car and obviously could have been much worse.

I fully corporated with the home owner, it was all friendly and I apologised profusely.

2 weeks later they phone up asking for £300. We are talking 3 year old beech trees, tiny things, about 2 ft tall. I had to cut through the stems of 5 of them to get the car out. The rest are either untouched or got bent over and are still healthy plants.

Their gardener reckons all 20 need digging out and new ones replanting.

I'm disputing that and offering to pay a third, which is more than fair in my opinion.

They just phoned up and said their gardener is coming tomorrow and I need to pay so I said I think it's unreasonable.

What do the people of the genny think ? Don't want to be an arlarse and want to put things right but can't see how all of the plants need replacing.
