Always seemed a nice chap.  I'm sure The Sun will write lovely things about him now.

Some testimony from a Villa fan - and there are dozens like it.

I was standing on my seat in The Trinity Road end when a wayward clearance from a Villa player (could have been Derek Mountfield) cleared the pitch and hit me smack in the face knocking me backwards over several rows of seats. The Watford stuff is the stuff of legend. The way he handled that documentary, the maker said he could have torpedoed it at any point but wouldn't as it was the truth, is testament to a decent and proper football man.

Seemed like a really nice bloke, always liked him. Opinions around the game seem to support that, he was hugely popular. David Pleat was on the radio and said it was McKenzie behind the nasty stuff - no surprises there.

Not too sure I agree. He took on a team that had just reached the WC semi and there was a good crop of players to work with. Does not however diminish his achievements at Watford and Villa.
