Double Agents

In advance of our FA Cup Third Round tie at Anfield on Sunday, YNWA looks at the careers of some of those players have represented both the reds and the Pilgrims over the years.

Current double agent

Reserves centre-back Lloyd Jones signed from his hometown club Plymouth Argyle in June 2011, turning pro in May 2013 after sitting on the bench in our Premiership visit to Fulham earlier that month. He skippered our Under-21’s for more than a season, and is spending this campaign on loan at Swindon Town, his fourth temporary switch since joining the reds, having signed a new two-year contract last August.

Other recent double agents

Bruce Grobbelaar moved down the south coast in August 1996, joining Argyle from Southampton on a free transfer. He turned out 41 times in his one season at Home Park before joining Oxford United the following season. Our eccentric keeper signed from Vancouver Whitecaps for £250,000 in March 1981 and played 628 times for the reds, helping us to six League titles, one European Cup, three FA Cups, three League Cups and three FA Charity Shields.

Left-back Jim Beglin was Bob Paisley’s last signing, arriving from Shamrock Rovers for £20,000 in May 1983, and went on to score three times in 98 reds appearances. He helped us to four trophies in 1986, the League and FA Cup double, a shared FA Charity Shield and the Screen Sport Super Cup. After breaking his leg against Everton in January 1987, he moved on to Leeds United in July 1989. He joined the Pilgrims on loan during the 1989/90 season, making five League appearances.

Brian Hall signed for the reds in July 1968 fresh from graduating university, and scored 21 goals in 224 games, helping us to claim a League title, UEFA Cup, FA Cup and FA Charity Shield. His most memorable moment came when he bagged his first reds goal, the FA Cup Semi-final winner against Everton at Old Trafford in March 1971, also scoring at the same stage against Leicester City three years later. He moved on to Plymouth Argyle in July 1976, scoring sixteen times in 43 League games before moving to Burnley a year later to finish his playing career. He returned to Anfield in 1991 to take up the post of Public Relations Manager, a position he held until retiring in 2012. He died in July 2015.

Up front

Vic Wright struck 33 times in 85 reds games after signing from Rotherham United in March 1934. He moved on to Plymouth Argyle for £1,000 in June 1937. Fred Buck scored just once in thirteen reds games after arriving from West Bromwich Albion in May 1903, moving on to the Pilgrims the following March. He only stayed in the south until April 1906 when he re-joined the Baggies.

Dick Allman joined Plymouth from Portsmouth in December 1907, scoring seven times in 21 outings as they finished as runners up in the Southern League before moving to Stoke in May 1908. He left the Potters to sign for the reds only two months later. However, he made just one senior appearance before moving to Wrexham in September 1909.

Inside-forward Alan Banks signed from Rankin Boys in August 1956, turning professional in May 1958. He struck six times in just eight games for the reds, leaving for Cambridge City in July 1961 and going on to enjoy far greater success in the lower divisions, netting more than two hundred goals. He joined Plymouth from Exeter City, netting five times in nineteen Second Division outings in 1966/67 before re-joining the Grecians.

Inside-forward Dickie Morris left Welsh side Druids to sign for the reds in March 1902. He left for Leeds City in July 1905 after five goals in 39 reds outings. He left Grimsby Town to sign for Plymouth in the summer of 1907, scoring ten times in 37 games as they finished second in the Southern League. He also became the first Plymouth player to be capped at full international level when he played for Wales in April 1908. He moved on to Reading at the end of that season.

Herbert Leavey had two spells with Plymouth, leaving Argyle to join the reds in June 1910, failing to score in five games before moving on to Barnsley in August 1911. He had struck seven goals in 75 Southern and Western League matches for Argyle.

At the back

Keeper Jim Furnell signed from Burnley for £18,000 in February 1962, taking over in goal during that promotion season. However, he broke his finger early the following campaign, losing his place to Tommy Lawrence. He made just 28 first-team appearances in total before moving to Arsenal in November 1963, and is fondly remembered as Plymouth Argyle’s greatest ever custodian, joining them from Rotherham United in 1970 and playing 207 times before joining the coaching staff in the summer of 1976.

Right-back Jack Chadburn arrived from West Bromwich Albion in May 1903 and only played twice before moving on to Plymouth in March 1904, netting once in fifteen League outings before being released at the end of the campaign, their first as a professional club. Right-back Percy Saul struck four times in 94 games for Argyle before joining the reds in April 1906. He netted twice in 83 reds outings, moving on to Coventry City in July 1909.

The management

Former keeper Tony Waiters worked in Liverpool’s youth development programme after retiring, becoming Plymouth boss in October 1972. He led them to the Third Division title in 1975, staying in charge until April 1977 when he took charge of Vancouver Whitecaps.

Andy Beattie guested for the reds at full-back during the Second World War, and later spent some time on our backroom staff. He managed a host of clubs as well as the Scotland national side, working with Bill Shankly at Huddersfield Town, having played alongside him at Preston North End. He was in charge of Plymouth from October 1963 to May 1964, helping to keep them up in the Second Division.

Mike Kelly was Roy Hodgson’s assistant at Fulham, following him to Anfield for his unsuccessful spell as reds boss. He had been Manager of Plymouth between May 1977 and February 1978, having previously been in charge of their reserves.

Other double agents

Welsh half-back John ‘Geezer’ Hughes joined the reds in 1903, moving on to Plymouth three years later after two goas in 32 reds games. He only played once for Argyle, in October 1906, having to retire due to injury three months later.

Scottish half-back Tom Cleghorn moved to Anfield from Blackburn Rovers in March 1896, scoring just once in seventy games before joining Portsmouth in August 1899. He left Pompey for Plymouth in 1903, where he played five League games as well as taking on coaching duties.

Think we will see Klavan at CB with Lucas, other than that I think its spot on. Might not be too much fun to watch !

Down Memory Lane

YNWA takes a look back at the previous visits of the Pilgrims to L4 as we prepare to host Plymouth Argyle in our FA Cup Third Round tie on Sunday. We have won three and drawn two of our previous Anfield encounters, all of which were Second Division fixtures.

Most recently

Half-back Johnny Wheeler played his 177th and final reds game in our 2-1 win in December 1961. Alan A’Court and Ian St. John scored our goals to secure Bill Shankly’s fiftieth win as reds boss in his 91st game in charge.

1,000 up

Alan A’Court and Geoff Twentyman both struck braces as we won 4-1, our thousandth home League game.

Other win

We won 4-1 in September 1959 thanks to goals from Jimmy Melia, Alan A’Court, Roger Hunt and Ronnie Moran.

Other meetings

We were held to a 3-3 draw in September 1954 when Alan Arnell bagged a brace, with John Evans also on target. Inside-forward Alan Banks bagged his sixth and final reds goal as we were held to a 1-1 draw in March 1961.

Klopp has ruled out Milner, Coutinho and Matip. I doubt Sturridge will feature either.

Sounds like Gomez will play though.

Klopp has said in his PC Gomez is starting - brilliant news for him and for the club, he's a huge talent.

Think it'll be something like this but with Gomez for Sakho - hope Gomez plays CB that's where he could be a star.

So basically what Can said a week ago and ignoring the fact that Klopp has already said Gomez is starting...
